CBI: In your view, what makes a great leader? What could most CEOs do better?


RM: Accessibility is very important if you want to be a successful leader. I think it’s essential for creating a positive culture and making employees feel as though they’re part of something bigger. I’m very fortunate and grateful to have so many passionate and talented people on the HealthCity team. Personally, I try to keep an open door and spend as much time in our clubs as possible.


CBI: In your opinion, what’s wrong with the way that fitness is mar- keted in Europe? What do you think average members want, but aren’t getting? What could club operators do better?


RM: There’s way too much focus on price and not enough on the products and services that will make people


successful. Our members want more friendly attention, and to feel as though they’re a part of a community. The biggest thing that will drive this is our positive and caring culture. Our mem- bers are people—not dollar signs.


CBI: What are your current objec- tives for the company, and what will it look like in five years? Does HealthCity, like Fitness First, have aspirations involving the Middle East, Asia, or Australia?


RM: Our principal current objective is to successfully complete the rebranding process for our new clubs in France, Italy, and Spain. We’re also placing a heavy emphasis on growing our fitness and personal-training business. Over the next three to five years,


we’d like to grow to 500 clubs and be the market leader in every country we’re active in. We’ve tried franchis- ing and are still exploring this model,


though not aggressively. During this period, we’ll be focusing on the Euro- pean market.


CBI: Does your company belong to Fit!vak, IHRSA’s branch associa- tion in the Netherlands? What do you regard as the key values and benefits that IHRSA provides for European clubs?


RM: We belong to Fit!vak/IHRSA and the EFAA. Industry organizations are key to raising the collective level of pro- fessionalism, education, and standards for fitness. Every year, we attend the IHRSA Convention and Trade Show and the IHRSA European Congress. These events provide great opportunities to learn, network, and grow. Every year, I come back inspired and recharged by the great content, great speakers, and great all-around time. —|
