| Editor’s Welcome |
September 11, 2001. That date has taken on a substance that few others own. It is serious, set forever in place, as solid and unchanging as a slab of black steel. Can it really be 10 years since the horrific events of that stunning, mind-numbing day took place and changed the world?
Yes, it has been 10 years, and, yes, the world remains changed. History can flex, and bend, and stretch to untenable lengths, but, once it’s been broken, it doesn’t snap back. Today, this place that all of us call our home seems a bit less predictable, stable, secure. Psychologically, viscerally, we remain on high alert. Ten years ago, we reported on the experiences, the losses, and
the unfathomable tragedies that befell people who worked in, or were members of, health clubs that were close to Ground Zero in lower Manhattan.* Approximately 20 were located near the World Trade Center, and, of that number, half were affected. We heard about facilities that had been destroyed—a ClubCorp affiliate on the 105th floor of the World Trade Cen- ter, the corporate offices of Plus One, a Fitness Company center at 3 World Trade Center; and we heard from ones that had offered their clubs, staff, and other resources to help New Yorkers in need—Crunch Fitness, Equinox Fitness, Health Fitness Corporation (HFC), The Sports Club Com- pany, The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers. … There were many good Samaritans then. For this issue of CBI, Contributing Editor Jon
Feld got back in touch with many of the same clubs he’d described so tellingly, so indelibly, in those dark days—ClubCorp, Crunch, Club One, Health Fitness, Plus One—to see how the people and the
companies had changed, developed, and were doing today. “The general sense conveyed was of strong resiliency, with
respect to the city, their businesses, and lives,” reports Feld. “While a subliminal unease and heightened security remain part of the new environment, there’s also optimism, progress, and renewal.” Ironically, his observation reminded me of something that I’d
written, in this space, in the November 2001 issue of CBI: “Let us begin by saying this: Let us not forget September 11.
And then, after a moment of silent reflection, let us pretend that life will go on as usual. It will not. But what remains, although changed—our families, homes, businesses, society—are the bricks, the building blocks, from which a new and better future will be fashioned.” That rebirth is slowly taking place. Let us end, by saying again: Let us not forget September 11. —|
