IHRSA Index Posts Improved Performance forFourth Consecutive Quarter
P
roviding some welcome relief from the generally gloomy economic news, IHRSA’s First Quarter Index reports that, between January and March, many
club companies posted improvements in all of their key financial metrics. The Index, which compiles results from 16 leading U.S.
health and sports club companies with a total of 503 facilities, documented strong results with respect to total revenue, mem- bership-dues revenue, nondues revenue, and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, and rent (EBITDAR). Total revenue for the quarter was 6.5% higher than for the
same quarter in 2010, while membership-dues revenue was up by 4.8%. Revenue from ancillary services increased by 10.2%, and EBITDAR grew by 7.1%. “Improved performance in the first quarter of this year
marks the fourth consecutive quarter of strong key indica- tors,” points out Jay Ablondi, IHRSA’s executive vice president of global products. “Although we’d anticipated slow growth, given the lagging economic recovery, robust performance from the Index and an overall increase in membership point to a potential uptrend for the industry.” Established same-store facilities recorded modest increases:
their sales revenue was up 1.5%, compared quarter to quarter, while membership dues were 1.7% higher, and nondues revenue, 1.2% higher. —|

Your Chance to Serve the Industry: Deadline Extended to September 16
T
he deadline for applying to serve on IHRSA’s board of directors has been extended to September 16, 2011. IHRSA board service, regarded as “a noble calling” by many of those who have served in that capacity, allows club professionals a unique opportunity to assist
the association, specifically, and the industry, in general, by providing insights, ideas, guidance, and strategic direction. “Serving on the IHRSA board was a great professional experience,” recalls Sandy Hoeffer, a
partner in Clubsource Development Partners, LLC. “I was honored to have the opportunity to help shape policies and practices that contribute to the health of our industry and to the health of individuals around the globe.” Each year, two to four board members complete their four-year term, and are subsequently
replaced by incoming directors. The resulting mix of new and veteran directors ensures a smooth and seamless transition and a board experience that’s both instructive and productive. “Imagine having the opportunity to work with some of the best minds in our industry,”
suggests former director Joe Cirulli, the president and owner of the Gainesville Health and Fitness Centers, in Gainesville, Florida. “Then, having the ability to work with these people to carve our industry’s future. It’s an incredible experience!” For full information and to obtain an application, log on to
