Gym Owner Named Good Citizen of the Year Jeff Armstrong, the owner of Wheaton Barbell and Fitness, a one-of-a-kind club in Wheaton, Illinois, was recently honored as the city’s Good Citizen of the Year for his contribution to the health and fitness of local citizens and public service employees. The award attests to the effectiveness of Armstrong’s unique approach to exercise, which is clearly reflected in his club’s design and equipment. Inside Wheaton Barbell and Fitness,
you won’t find rows of cardio machines or a group-exercise studio. Instead, you’ll find weights, mats, resistance equipment, and functional-training areas, which, in most cases, are being utilized by local residents, firefighters, or law enforcement officers. Armstrong’s gym and functional

Minnesota Names Anytime a Top Workplace
Anytime Fitness, the fastest-growing 24/7 fitness club franchise in the world, has been named one of the Top 100 Workplaces in Minnesota, according to an employee-based survey conducted by the Star Tribune. Anytime Fitness ranked No. 20 in the small business category, with the company’s
employees awarding it high marks in the following areas: feeling “genuinely appreciated,” having “confidence in their leaders,” and believing the organization is “going in the right direction.” Chuck Runyon, CEO, and Dave Mortensen, president, were also recognized with a special leadership award, a distinguished honor received by just two other executives in the state. “This is a wonderful honor for Anytime Fitness, especially considering that our
employees served as judges, which, of course, makes the recognition all the more meaningful,” says Runyon. Adds Mortensen: “We strive to make our work culture a creative, supportive, energetic, and happy environment where everyone feels valued.”—|

Abuse Resistance Education, is a national program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement with drugs, gangs, and violence. The NAC Attack Swim Team, made up of kids between the ages of 5 and 14, wanted to give back to the program after the local chapter experienced cuts in government funding. At the recent Newtown Elementary sixth- grade D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony, Brandi Perkovich, NAC’s aquatics director, presented Officer Shawn Pirog, the Newtown Township D.A.R.E. educa- tion officer, with a check for $1,000, a sum that the NAC Attack kids raised on their own. “This program was unique because
of the way in which the kids got excited about helping other kids,” said Linda Mitchell, director of public relations and marketing for NAC. “Once the idea was presented to them, they took it and ran with it on their own.”—|
