GHBA 2nd Quarter Report Card—2011 The GHBA staff is always busy looking for ways to improve members services, advocacy and education. Following is a quick look at what the association has been up to over the last three months.
Benefit Homes • Broke ground on the second home of the year with David Weekley Homes on a lot donated by The Howard Hughes Corporation in Bridgeland.
• Received $250,000 donation from the Westin Homes / Land Tejas Development Benefit Home in Discovery at Spring Trails. Checks will be presented to the three Benefit Homes charities, HomeAid Houston, The Alzheimer’s Association and Texas Children’s Cancer Center in September.
• Held vendor appreciation luncheon for the Newmark Homes / Caldwell Companies Benefit Home in Towne Lake.
Membership • GHBA has added more than 100 new members in the second quarter.
• GHBA has renewed over 300 members in the second quarter.
• GHBA held a membership drive on April 28 and 29 and added 73 new members from the drive!
Special Events • The Mid-Year Forecast Luncheon was the GHBA highlight event held in June. This year, we selected the brand new Westin Hotel at Memorial City to host this “must attend” sold- out event. Dr. Ray Perryman, our featured speaker, enlightened us on the future of the housing industry locally, statewide and nationally. From Dr. Perryman’s comments, Houston is holding its own and good things are on the horizon.
Councils and Committees
Sales & Marketing Council • The month of April was a quiet one for the SMC with all of our efforts being focused on the 2011 GHBA membership drive. Our SMC team members were instrumental in bringing in seven new members as well as acquainting themselves with many potential SMC members for the future.
• May was a fabulous month for the SMC Battle of the Builders networking event. This educational and fun-filled event was hosted by our friends at the BSH Showroom and sponsored by Ferguson, Kohler and Thermador. The teams competing in Battle of the Builders were: Ashton Woods

Homes, Taylor Morrison, Ryland Homes and Trendmaker Homes. DataSmart sponsored the championship belt, which was won by the team from Ashton Woods Homes. Our hostess for the event was Natalie Woods from Hot on Homes and our ring girl was none other than Lori Wilson.
Bay Area Builders Association • BABA hosted a hugely successful speed selling event on May 24 at Perry’s Market and Grille in Friendswood, connecting 11 area builders with 11 associates. Participating builders were Bayway Homes, Belleau Wood Homes Ltd., Bilmar Homes, Cervelle Homes Inc., Chesmar Homes, Diamond D Custom Homes LLC, Dynamic Builders Inc., Grand View Builders, Harbour Classic Builders LLC, Tilson Home Corporation and Trendmaker Homes.
• Nearly 100 members attended the extremely successful April luncheon, which focused on the effective use of the MLS. Featured presenters were Houston MLS Director Shaun Dauphine and Pattie Huey, the 2011 chair of the Houston Association of Realtors MLS Advisory Committee. Huey also chairs the Builder/Broker Connection Task Force, and serves on the boards for the Houston Association of Realtors, Texas Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.
• BABA’s annual Mid Year Forecast Luncheon featuring David Jarvis of Metrostudy took place on May 3. Nearly 100 members were in attendance for this popular event.
• The division hosted Bay Area Builders Association Support Our Troops/Operation Finally Home founder and 2010 Top 10 CNN Hero Dan Wallrath at their June luncheon.
Custom Builders Council • April luncheon featuring Jim McIngvale of Gallery Furniture had more than 115 attendees.
• May luncheon featured a panel of building science experts who gave attendees insights on ways they can reduce the number of warranty calls they receive.
• June luncheon featured a panel of associates who shared their insights on best practices from custom builders they do business with, as well as practices to avoid and suggestions on how builders can maximize their efficiency.
Montgomery County • May luncheon featuring real estate expert Ted Jones of Stewart Title (formerly chief economist at the Texas A&M Real Estate Center) took place at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott.
• June networking event at Berryhill Baja Grill on Market Street drew more than 100 participants.
Remodelors Council • April RMC luncheon featured City of Houston Residential Construction Codes Forum; more than 140 members attended.
• May RMC Vendor Showcase featured 25 vendors at Saint Arnold Brewing Company and had more than 125 attendees.
• In June, RMC participated in the 25th annual AIA Sandcastle Competition in Galveston. More than 160 GHBA members participated in this fun-filled event.
• The June RMC luncheon featured a panel of interior designers who gave attendees an update on trends in kitchen design. More than 100 members attended.
Associate Council • April’s “Lunch with the Legends” featured Will Holder, president of Trendmaker Homes; Steve von Hofe, division president of Taylor Morrison; and Cindy Hinson with Lennar Homes. There were 78 in attendance.
• Ninety attendees enjoyed May’s Builder Purchasing Manager Panel featuring Sindee Cox with Highland Homes and Dave Walton with Trendmaker Homes.
• June’s “Construction 101” presentation featuring Dave Yelovich with Tilson Homes and Scott Hill with Beazer Homes brought in 56 participants.
Education • Held the CAPS designation classes in April with 18 people in attendance.
• Held the Energy Code and Green Building Update Seminar in April with 58 attendees.
• Offered an Energy Star Guidelines for HVAC and had 30 people in attendance.
• Had a total of 276 in attendance for classes and seminars in the second quarter.
