CALLING ALL LEADERS... Interested in Serving on the Board

or in Another Leadership Position? Every year the association asks its members to consider serv- ing on the boards of directors locally, at the state level and/or the national level. This year is a little different. As President Mike Dishberger pointed out in his June article in Houston Builder magazine, the Nominating Committee has been replaced by the Leadership Development

Committee. One key difference is that the new committee will meet multiple times during the year (rather than just once) and actively seek, identify and mentor future leaders. As this process matures, more and more members will be in the “pipeline” for leadership positions on councils, committees, divisions, the board, and as TAB and NAHB directors. The purpose is to ensure that leaders are fully aware and prepared for their roles. To properly prepare the nominations, the deadline is August

15 for the GHBA board, secretary, associate vice president, TAB directors, and NAHB directors. The number of positions available each year is limited and many qualified candidates apply, so please send in your complete information right away for consideration. Leadership brings responsibility. For example, meeting at-

tendance is at your own expense. If you are interested in serving, please read the following information first!

dent and president, the person will also serve as a TAB director and usually as an NAHB director. GHBA reimburses the president and vice -president for travel related to those directorships. A minimum of six trips each year is required. The secretary must have been a GHBA builder/developer/remodeler member for at least three years and on the board for at least one year. If you qualify, are willing to make the commitment, and wish

to serve as secretary for 2012, please state those intentions in a cover letter with your resume or bio.

GHBA Associate Vice President: Beginning last year, a new position was added to the Execu-

tive Committee, associate vice president. This associate member serves for one year on the Executive Committee and board as an officer of the association. The associate member must have served on the board for at least one year. If you qualify and wish to serve, please send in your statement of intent with a resume or bio.

Call for State Directors GHBA’s directors for TAB are chosen each year. Current direc-

tors are not automatically chosen. You must state your interest in remaining as a TAB director if that is your desire. TAB directors must attend a minimum of three of the four board meetings during the year. The meetings are in Austin and other places around the state. The first one is at the Sunbelt Builders Show in October, as is the final meeting to be held in 2011. The second is generally in February. The third meeting is usually in June. You must attend the actual board meeting, generally four hours on Friday or Saturday. There may be additional special meetings called as needed. The bylaws state that you must not miss 50% of the meetings. So for example, if there are a total of six meetings, you must attend at least four. You are also encouraged to attend the caucus meet- ing and to participate on committees and task force groups and contribute to the state PAC.

Call for National Directors GHBA directors for NAHB are chosen each year. Current direc-

tors are not automatically chosen. You must state your interest in remaining as an NAHB director if that is your desire. NAHB directors must attend two of the three board meetings. The first one is in the spring in Washington, D.C. The second one is in the fall at some other destination, and the final one is at the conven- tion and IBS the following year. You are encouraged to attend caucus meetings and other meetings of interest and contribute to BUILDPAC. You must attend the actual board meetings, gener- ally four to six hours.
