What does the program offer for artists or bands that are still in the early stages of their careers? The program gives those artists and bands a platform to reach new fans and gain experience playing in a live setting, while not needing
to worry about transporting lots of backline or stressing about required ticket sales. The multitrack audio recording lets bands that play our stage walk out with a really solid live demo that they can release to their fans or give to a producer/engineer before a studio session. LIVE @ Best Buy performances are ALL AGES, as compared to so many shows in Boston that are 18+. For the bigger, more popular Bos-
ton bands, the LIVE @ Best Buy showcase is a way to reach an underserved demographic. Also, some of these bands have been on a tour or two but can’t get out on the road as often as they’d like. The livestream component adds global reach to the performance, allowing fans worldwide to tune in. Bands are excited about the ability to reach fans with new and engaging content.
Where do you see the program going within Boston? How would you like to expand it?
We hope to add a full selection of pro quality musical instruments to the Newbury Street store in the future. I’d also like to use the stage space to host product demonstrations. Technology lessons. Video game releases and tournaments.
Any favorite shows thus far, besides Sean Quinn featuring Andrew Campanella and the Ecuadorians? We had an amazing event in May with Karmin, a duo whose YouTube cover songs rocketed them to viral fame. The show was booked
about a month before the duo released a cover of Chris Brown’s (EMBED YOUTUBE LINK:
http://bit.ly/hStdrs) “Look At Me Now.” Within a few days the video had over a million plays, and to date has 23 million views. We had almost 300 people attend that performance and, because of the livestream, over 4,000 watching online. This event is a great
example of the power of the program to take what would have been a one-off event and expand its reach through web presence. In the Karmin example, here was a band with a legion of newfound fans, as a result of a viral video. These fans are global (as far away as Brazil, Turkey, France, and the Philippines) and hungry for access to the artist. Karmin had never toured, but these fans, through the power of the Internet, were able to connect to the artist in a real and engaging way.
