LTM: Do you see singer-songwriters creeping back into the mainstream, a la Simon & Garfunkel or James Taylor? Has social media been a determinant in that?
Micah: I don’t know if singer-songwriters have ever not been in the mainstream. “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Taylor Swift, even Kanye West. Some of these artists might not appear as the singer- songwriter type on first blush but they are in every in the sense of the word. Having said that, I think the singer-songwriter “genre” has definitely had resurgence in the last few years. Social media has been a big part of it. All those sites kind of even the playing field for everyone. Which leads there to be plenty of terrible music out there. But by the same token, artists that normally wouldn’t get any of that kind of distribution now have the opportunity to do it for free. I can only hope that through what I’m doing, it will put me in the right position to get exposure and have a long and successful career in music. Right now, for me, everything is new, exciting and fresh. I’m learning so much about my business, my music and myself as I go along.
LTM: What are some of the big highlights for you in your career thusfar?
Micah: A big one for me was opening for Matt Costa in my hometown. It was a sold out show, right around the time when Costa was really popular and doing some touring with Jack Johnson. I remember getting to the venue and there was literally a line that snaked around a few blocks near the venue. I parked and was walking in for sound check when some people stopped to get my autograph and picture without me playing a note or even knowing who I was. Another big one would have to be my whole spring tour. That was basically my first national tour, spanning both coasts, set up all by myself. I ended up making money by the end of it. I played 30-40 shows and saw so many cities I’d never been to before. Words can’t really do it justice. Every day, my tourmate Ryan Schmidt and I would just sit back and take in the fact that we’re touring the country on our own. It just gave me a huge confidence boost and reassurance that I can absolutely make music a full time career for a really long time if I put my mind and efforts into it.
