nigo Montoya is a four-piece ensemble from the Philadelphia region that formed in the summer of 2010. Te band takes their name from the classical character in the novel (and film adaptation) Te Princess Bride. Like many musicians, they don’t enjoy limiting themselves creatively or sticking clearly to one genre, but in reality they tend to favor groove-heavy

jams with solid hooks and soulful playing. Influenced equally by classic rock staples like Pink Floyd and the Beatles, indie rock acts like Spoon, Dinosaur Jr, and LCD Soundsystem, and a healthy dose of soul music, hip hop, and various electronic genres, Inigo Montoya is starting to form a unique sound.

Te band recorded their first EP, Places We’d Imagine, this past winter. Recently leaked online, the official release

will also be free and will include album art and liner notes. In their one year of existence, Inigo has played some great rock clubs in Philly (North Star Bar, Grape Room) and are looking for more opportunities to perform in the Northeast and Mid- Atlantic US.

Let’s Talk Magazine had a duel with Inigo Montoya in a far-off castle and asked them some questions. At first, the

band answered every question with “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” Eventually, we got lead singer/guitarist Andrew Gleason to open up a bit more. Check it out!

Let’s Talk Magazine: What made you decide to leak the new album, Places We’d Imagine, yourselves? Inigo Montoya: We figured people’d want to listen to it if we made it really easy for them! Other than a few of our best friends and a handful of industry folks (ahem...Andrew Campanella...) we didn’t seem to get much attention at first. We figured a free record that’s easy to download will help make listening to us less of a burden on the attention-deficit generation. Equally important is the fact that our friends and families kept asking when the record would be done, so we appeased them with the leak. We’ll eventually set up a bandcamp page, where listeners can pay what they want, but only when the artwork is done.

LTM: You’ve recently become a four-piece. Who does what? How much of a collaborative effort is the songwriting process? IM: Each song is different. I essentially think of myself as the primary songwriter but I only work on parts of songs aſter we’ve come up with the main groove(s) as a band. Usually lyrics and melodies come aſter that. Most of the writing happens on the fly (it helps when you record every rehearsal). So collaboration is the lifeblood of the band. Tere are exceptions with some of our newer songs, but this record was born out of late night jam sessions.
