FIRST ELEVEN MAGAZINE’s round-up of news from the independent schools sector
Google supports maths and has pledged 1,000,000 Euros to help cover the costs for the next fi ve years of the International Mathematical Olympiads (IMO), which is now in its 52nd year. Over 100 nations are sending students to the event which, this year is being hosted by the Netherlands. Many of the former winners of the IMO have gone on to win the Fields Medal, which is awarded every fi ve years, to two to four mathematicians, under the age of 40, who have made important contributions to the fi eld. It is considered the closest award to a Nobel Prize given to a mathmatician. T e UK 2011 team will be picked from students attending a training and selection camp at Oundle School, Northamptonshire, this term.

Students In Science Taking to the air
Two baby hawks will soon be helping students from Reading-based Leighton Park School learn about fl ying and aerodynamics. T e hawks, which are owned by Physics teacher Rachael Mayne, are in a training programme to familiarise them with the school grounds, staff and pupils before they are let loose and used in teaching. T e aim is for the birds to be used widely across the school’s physics and science curriculum.
● Malvern St James in Worcestershire co-hosted, with the Institute of Physics, a “Science of Ice Cream” lecture in
celebration of the 2011 National Science and Engineering Week. T e free event was presented by Dr Helen Heath, Director of Studies at Bristol University’s School of Physics and included a discussion on research and studies of materials at very low temperature. T e day, of course, included
ice-cream tasting! ● For the 15th year running, pupils from Oundle attended the 177th annual convention organised by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Washington DC. T irty six pupils heard lectures by leading scientists in their fi eld and visited famous DC landmarks including the campuses of Yale and George Washington Universities.

More maths Signifi cantly for its
popularity, MyMaths, an online interactive website, hit a milestone this year, signing its 5,000th school
worldwide. The website which was started by two maths teachers, in 2002, in response to a lack of maths’ teaching resources is now used by 4 million pupils in 70 countries, including top performing nations such as Finland, South Korea, and Switzerland.

UK independent schools’ surviving recession
Private schools are weathering the recession, according to the Independent Schools Council’s annual census. T e ISC which represents more 1,200 schools indicates only a 1% fall in pupil numbers, from 511,886 in January 2010 to 506,500 in January 2011.
