Editor’s letter What’s inside
Welcome to a bumper summer issue packed with school news,
education, fee-saving ideas
and exciting ways to spend the holidays, whether it’s glamping or sailing. As we draw to the end of an academic
year, it’s a time to reflect on the ups and downs of the last 12 months, when we celebrated an uplifting royal wedding but also witnessed dramatic and tragic, natural and man-made disasters. Nothing underlines our vulnerability more than recent events in Japan. As debate continues over climate change and the wisdom of relying upon nuclear power, FE asked specialist educationalists and scientists for their views on the role of schools in educating scientists for a safer future. We focus in on your children’s career prospects and found that although competition for university places and jobs in the arts subjects is stiff, there are not enough bright students applying for places in the science sectors and asked, Why? FE’s objective is to stimulate debate,
as well as to inform. So I am excited to announce that we have opened Te coffee shop on our website where parents can discuss their views and look for and receive help, whether it’s in parenting skills or seeking or advertising a part- time job. With so many new ideas to chew over, all that remains is for me to wish you a happy summer holiday
