Think about reputation Choosing a university on its academic reputation can certainly put you at the top of the list for future employers and graduate recruitment agencies. But applying on this basis is not always the wisest decision, especially with a popular course. Even if you’re predicted the right grades, the demand for places might be too great and you may find yourself unlucky. Similarly, on an oversubscribed course at a popular university, tutorial time and facilities may be sparse. Again it’s important to research your course’s

popularity, look at the places available and delve into the department itself. Emeritus Professor of Higher Education at UCL says: “Universities often considered to be ‘lesser’ institutions may have the highest status of particular subjects; for example,
