Cystitis in Women
Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder usually caused by a urine infection. Women are eight times more likely to suffer from cystitis than men as their urethra (the tube from the bladder that passes out urine) is shorter and opens nearer the anus. Risk factors include having diabetes mellitus, being pregnant and being sexually active.
Typical symptoms of cystitis are burning pain when urinating, frequent urination, stomach pains and perhaps blood in the urine. Less common symptoms include weakness, vomiting or fever. Urine may also become cloudy or smell offensive.
Treatment
For the majority of cases, cystitis is a self limiting condition that improves without any complications.

If you are not pregnant and don’t have certain medical conditions then not taking any treatment may be an option. The immune system can often clear the infection. In many mild cases, symptoms resolve within a few days. A three day antibiotic course is a common treatment. If, however symptoms don’t improve despite taking one type of antibiotic then you may need a different one as the bacteria responsible may be resistant to that antibiotic. Paracetamol or Ibuprofen can reduce pain, discomfort and a high temperature.
Products that alkalise the urine may also improve the symptoms of cystitis.
