Orange Tip The
Orange Tip butterfly is one of the first butterflies to
emerge in the spring and should be seen in our parks and gardens from the middle of this month. Although some other butterflies, such as Tortoiseshells, wake up with the first warmth in January and February, these are individuals who have managed to over-winter.
The pretty Orange Tip is a small white butterfly but it’s only the males which have characteristic wing tips.
The
underside has white forewings whilst the hind wings have a beautiful pattern of yellow and green which resembles the sun shining through cow parsley flower heads. The females’
wing
tips are just black.
It depends on how our spring weather develops; in warm springs, the Orange Tip will emerge from its chrysalis in mid- April; if it stays cold, not many may be seen until June.
The butterfly is in most years very common around here although its food plants are not that easy to find. The caterpillars feed on a wide choice of plants, including watercress, cuckooflower and garlic mustard with the last the most popular. The eggs are also orange and are laid singly in the flower heads; it appears that once an egg has been laid, then other females

avoid the same spot. This is because the caterpillars are very cannibalistic and are only too happy to eat the eggs.
Normally the caterpillar eats the flowers and seedpods of the plant, often ignoring the leaves; the closely-related Green-Veined White just eats the leaves. When fully grown the larvae pupates on the old flower head, the pupae camouflages itself by looking very like the seed head. Here it will stay until the following spring.
The adult butterfly, it is claimed, is one of the most unpalatable in the UK, although who’s done a taste test, perhaps those eating bushtucker? It is found over most of the British Isles and extensively across the world, from China to the Arctic Circle, with some species also in North Africa and the Mediterranean, following a similar colour scheme.
