NEWS Conservative Development
£1m refurbishment of Eltham Conservative Club is to go ahead after councillors gave approval to their development plans.
The aim of the project is to re-vitalise the club, re-furbish the building and restore the atmosphere around one of the few original remaining houses in the High Street.
The plans involve extending the façade of the existing building to replicate part of its original appearance. The east end of the building, occupied by the Conservative Club since in 1930s, was destroyed by bombing during the war and replaced more recently by a single storey extension.

project will mean re- construction of the front
of the former 19th century villa, in Eltham High Street, half of which was demolished in a Second World War bombing raid.
It will be paid for by a housing development at the rear of the property, where 13 new houses and eight flats, accessed from Footscray Road, will be developed by Croudace Homes.
The scheme will involve re-location of the club’s bowling green and refurbishment of two old cottages in the grounds.

Club secretary Don Taylor said: “We’re over the moon. It has been a fairly nervous couple of years as we have developed the plans and put them forward for approval.
“It’ll enable us to
completely
modernise the building and put the club on a strong financial footing.”

It’s likely that one of the first moves will be to re-locate the bowling green and provide more parking to the front of the building; this will be followed by the housing development and the adding of an extra storey on the east side of the building to replicate the original frontage.
The house was originally built in the 19th century by docks magnate Augustus Timothy and called Percy Villas; an adjacent property Margaret Villas, where Marlowe Gardens now stands, housed the staff and servants.
