Underground Trains Scott
Bennett of London and Kent Construction
was surprised when he saw the plans and the scope of the project. His client, a gentleman from Lee, who had contacted Scott through the SEnine magazine, wanted a room built - underground - to house his extensive model train set.
The client was frustrated. Some years before he had received planning permission to build a suitable room in his back garden. However every time he contacted a builder they told him that they did not want the job with its special requirements, the main one being it needed to be underground.
The garden was small and also had a wonderful view to the rear across playing fields and he did not want to loose either of these. Three frustrating years after planning approval he decided to try again and contacted London and Kent Construction from their advertisement in SEnine.
With many subterranean rooms under his experienced belt Scott agreed to take the project. With the passing of three years some of the details were out of date so London and Kent Construction arranged for their architect to examine, check and redraw the plans. As the alterations were minor there was no need to resubmit for amended planning permission, something that is normally within Scott's remit.
And so the adventure started. As the building was going from boundary to boundary the neighbours were approached for their consent.

The hole began to grow into the ground. However it was not all plain sailing. The weather, and more precisely the snow interrupted work and tried to collapse the hole while Scott and his team had to work just as hard shoring it up and extracting water from the hole with pumps.
The hole secure, the snow gone, work started with the on site construction of
the form work. Because of the weight and pressures involved in pouring 350mm concrete walls they were poured in two stages. Around 52 cubic metres of concrete was used in the floor and walls to construct the 10m by 5.5m room. The walls and floors in place the roof was constructed with rafters on load bearing steels, overlaid with board and then topped of with an impervious layer of fibreglass. Then the artificial turf was laid to finish the project.
The room now clickity clacks and toots to the sound of model trains travelling along the hundreds of feet of track.
London and Kent Construction are local builders with a huge reputation for work par excellence.
