Pendleside Hospice is a registered charity providing specialist care to adults with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. The purpose of the hospice is to improve the quality of life for patients. This is achieved by the provision of specialist medical and
nursing care and of social, emotional and spiritual support for patients and their families and carers. Care is given free of charge to those who need it. The services provided are designed to fit in with the needs of patients at various stages of their illness. Day Therapy aims to provide patients with symptom control, rehabilitation, nursing care and peer support. There are opportunities to enjoy trips out and afternoon activities. Lunch and refreshments are provided and transport can be arranged on request. Outpatient appointments can also be made for physiotherapy, psychological support and complementary therapy. The Hospice at Home team extends the care provided by Pendleside out into the community.
Qualified nurses and
auxiliary staff provide nursing care, emotional support and respite care day or night. Care can also be provided round the clock, 24 hours a day at times of crisis and for patients who chose to stay at home for end of life care. The inpatient unit at the hospice has 10 individual ensuite bedrooms available for patients that are admitted for assessment, symptom control, end of life care, rehabilitation and crisis respite. All rooms are designed to enable patients to maintain as much independence as possible and are equipped with a TV/DVD player and access to a selection of Sky channels. The beautiful hospice gardens can be viewed from every room. Other services include equipment loan, family support and bereavement support. The hospice currently costs over £3.2 million per year to run. A grant from the local Primary Care Trust currently provides approximately 25% of running costs, but the balance, over £2.35 million, is raised from fundraising events and donations from the community. All offers of support and donations are gratefully received. If you would like to organise a fundraising event, the hospice can help with ideas,
advice, support
materials, publicity and general assistance. They are also always looking for volunteers.
It’s a great way of using your
time and skills for the benefit of others whilst also gaining new experiences, meeting people and having fun. If you would like further information about the hospice, or would like to get involved with helping to raise the much needed funds to provide the care that is relied upon by so many in our community, telephone the fundraising office on: 01282 440120 or email
