COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER

February 24 - March 2, 2011 Vol. 9 • No. 8 Woodfin • Weaverville • Barnardsville • Alexander Fifty Cents

Bill Dorf believes smaller lots will help renew interest in his project that has at times struggled to find buyers over the past decade. To help lower prices at Reems

Creek Village, he asked Weaverville Town Council to accept a re-subdi- vision that would create seven addi- tional smaller lots. Council approved the preliminary

plan Monday (Feb. 21) but not before a lengthy discussion. While Dorf said the first section

of the development has sold 15 of its 16 lots, much of the second and third sections have languished with only 10 of 45 lots sold thus far. Dorf’s plan would divide a portion of those lots, lowering the average acreage per lot in the development from .788 to .683. “I think it would help us take the

sting out of what we have felt as de- velopers,” he told council members. However, Weaverville Town At-

torney Patsy Brison said before final approval can be reached, the roads in the development will have to meet state and town standards. Te deteriorating conditions of the

roads led the council to reject accept- ing them into the municipal system last year. An independent engineer at the

time estimated the repairs to cost more than $60,000, a figure Dorf balked at last year. Dorf did not speak specifically to

what repairs the roads would need, but told council, “I have every inten- tion of doing everything I have to do and need to do. ... I have no choice but to comply.” Councilman Doug Dearth urged

Dorf to fix the roads but voiced his support of the proposal. “I think this is a better use of the

land,” he said. Other landowners in Reems Creek

Village also supported Dorf’s plan. “I am very happy for this to hap-

pen if it keeps the development mov- ing,” said Kevin Volpe. Before the new lots can be sold in

the development, council will have to give final approval of the plan. In other news, the council passed a

resolution of consideration to annex a section of Woodland Hills com- monly known as the lake section. Tere are approximately 30 plats in the development. Te town took in neighboring sections of Woodland Hills in 2010. Te resolution gives council two years to mull an intent to annex resolution. Mayor Al Root recommended Bill

Biggers and John Dankel to be re- appointed to the town’s zoning board of adjustment and Charles Sullivan to fill a vacant seat.
