By Clint Parker The Childhood Development
program at Erwin High School has been in place ever since the school opened back in the late 1970s, but in the more than 30 years that the program has been a fixture at the school, it has never received a five-star rating until now. The program, licensed under
the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, has re- ceived its first five-star rating much to the delight of everyone involved such as Krista Reed, who oversees the classroom part of the program. The program allows students
at the school to take two semes- ters of class and lab and meet several other requirements in order to be eligible for a job at a daycare facility. About 30 students currently take the pro- gram. It is equivalent to a class at Asheville-Buncombe Techni- cal Community College. Many of the students who
take the class look to go on to college and teach or work in child development programs. Brook Maynor, who was one of the children in the daycare program at Erwin High School several years ago, is now one of the high school students taking care of the children today. Maynor said that it is special
to have that relationship with the program, adding, “I hope that I make a impression on some of these children.” It also allows parents with 2-5
year olds an affordable alterna- tive for daycare. The cost is $90 per week, which includes snacks and lunch, and currently there are more than a dozen open- ings. Hours of care are from 7:20
am until 4 pm Monday through Friday, and the child needs to be potty-trained. Any parents in- terested in enrolling their child in the daycare program should call 232-4263.
