Where we worship

By Loren Metts If you are looking for a Chris-

tian church that is non-tradition- al and “out of the box”, the Free- dom Biker Church of Asheville may be the perfect place for you. In May 2008, Mike Wilson

and his wife, Linda, official- ly started the Freedom Biker Church of Asheville.

Earlier

that same year, the couple began a community bible study aimed at reaching out to un-churched bikers in the Asheville communi- ty. “When we started the study, we knew if we had the words ‘bible study’ in it, we might not have a lot of interest,” Wilson ex- plained.

“So we named it ‘Biker

BS’ for short and that definitely worked. The bible study grew so much that we started FBCA only a few months later.” The church began meeting at Bellagio Bis- tro in North Asheville first and then worshiped at the weekday facilities of North Point Baptist on Monticello Road.

For the

past six months, FBCA has met at Parkway Harley Davidson in Swannanoa. They plan to move into the old CP&L building on Gashes Creek Road in east Asheville later this year. As of this spring, there will be

12 Freedom Biker Churches, six of which are located in North Carolina.

“This is not a f ly-by-

night church,” Wilson said. “We are commissioned by the Baptist

State Convention and we teach the Bible as Absolute Truth from the very front to the very back.” The Freedom Biker Church orig- inated in Angier, North Carolina (near Raleigh) by Pastor Mike Beasley.

The Asheville loca-

tion was the second church to form. Freedom Biker Churches can also be found in Mississippi, South Carolina, Louisiana and Canada. “There is nothing traditional

about our church,” Wilson said. “Jeans, black leather and tattoos are the standard dress code. We have several live bands that lead us in worship each week. A lot of

our music is old rock-n-roll with a new and improved message.” FBCA sees the church building only as a tool to reach others. “The only reason we exist is to share Jesus Christ. We have to get out from behind our walls and go where people are.” One of the most important bi-

ble verses for FBCA is John 8:36, where we are told that ‘if the Son has set you free, then you are free indeed!’ “We have a strong focus on God’s love and forgiveness here,” Wilson said.

“We believe

that God wants our availability more than our ability. He can forgive us of anything! We also

believe that where you’ve been isn’t nearly as important as where you are going.” FBCA meets each Sunday

starting at 10 am with music, food

and fellowship. Their

weekly worship rally begins at 11 am with a nursery, kids Chopper Church and Genera- tion Next for teens.

Following

the rally, many church members enjoy riding motorcycles togeth- er. FBCA also has home prayer groups meeting each Wednesday night. For more information about Freedom Biker Church of Asheville, call 231-6142 or go to freedombiker.com.
