Woodfin
Trolley car gets new lease on life
By Matt Tate It has been approximately 77
years since an Asheville trolley car has roamed the rails in Buncombe County. One group in Woodfin is work-
ing to end that drought. Workers from Craggy Mountain
Line have been restoring a 1927 Brill Birney Safety Car for the past two years. On Friday (Feb. 18), they placed the car on modified single- truck wheels as the group continues to revamp the car for future opera- tion. Rocky Hollifield with Craggy
Mountain Line said the trolley car will be included into a railroad ex- perience the group aims to bring to Woodfin including a depot and train excursion along the French Broad River. Te trolley was No. 119 in the
Asheville system. According to Hol- lifield, the trolley car group was de- commissioned in September 1934 and cars were sold. Car No. 119 eventually ended up in the hands of an Asheville family who lived in it for decades, thus preserving much of the structure. Te car needs wiring and other
esthetic interior details before it is ready for use.
Workers align the trolley car with its new wheels.
