By Matt Tate Budgetary impasses at the

state level have Weaverville leaders thinking about how

they should proceed forward with their 2011-2012 budget. A sticking point on a local

level could be how the State of North Carolina decides to proceed with Department of Transportation duties. Weav- erville Town Manager Michael Boaz said there have been state- level discussions about turning over DOT-maintained roads in municipalities that do not have U.S. highway designation to towns. Larry Sprinkle, public works

director, was adamantly op- posed to the measure. “I think it would end up being

a terrible mistake,” he said, ref- erencing his memories of poor road conditions in the area be- fore the DOT and Powell Bill allowed for better maintained

throughways. A current state budget pro-

posal would augment little from last years municipal distribu- tion, save a slight decrease in sales tax revenues, Boaz added. Mayor Al Root said town

leaders will also look at pay for town employees. Munici- pal workers have not received merit-pay increases in the last two budget cycles and did not receive cost-of-living increases under the current budget, al- though the town administered a one-time bonus of $515 to each of the town employees in December. Council members plan to

reconvene in April or May to begin discussing specific line items for the 2011-2012 bud- get.

North Buncombe Hero

Tis week’s Hero of the Week is Barnardsville Elementary School fourth-

grade student Jordan Vrolyk, who was named the Star 104. 3 Kid of the Week for the week of Feb. 21-25. Vrolyk is a new student at Barnardsville and has been recognized for her

warm and gracious personality. Teacher Kelley Edmonds said in a release, “Te truth is there have been

many students who share these characteristics over the years, but one sel- dom hears, ‘You silly goose,’ while speaking to a 9-year-old friend or, ‘Oh I’m sorry, you go first.’ Her mannerisms and mild demeanor amaze me daily and set her apart as a magnet in the classroom. My other children have come to see this too- just as I did when she first graced my doorway.” Vrolyk, 9, will be announced as the week’s Star Kid live on the air Friday

(Feb. 25). Vrolyk’s profile and photo will be placed on the Star 104.3 website,
