Leicester

History of the old Leicester Mill

By George Mears On June 1, 1915, Gay Felmet of

Leicester sold one-half undivided interests in a certain parcel of land containing what people referred to as “Te Corn Mill” to Oscar Duckett also of Leicester. Te land was located in the vil-

lage of Leicester. At that time, the mill was known as Frank Brown Roller Mills. Also sold with the Roller Mill were one-half undi- vided interests in the Light Power Plant in the village of Leicester. Duckett was also the owner of the Mill at Craggy at the end of the bridge. Hilliard P. Brookshire, son-in-

law of Duckett, was the manager of the Roller Mill. Te house next to the mill, which still stands to- day, was owned by Brookshire. Some of the employees of the

mill were Shuford Rogers, who drove a truck delivering the orders taken by Brookshire. Dan Israel was the operator of the mill. Clin- ton Penley, Douglas Brown, June

Crum and his son Dean Crum also worked there. When Duckett was a boy, his

parents owned and resided on a farm that later became Green Hills Cemetery. According to Duckett’s

obituary, he was buried at the site once occupied by the Duckett family garden.
