Hollinshead preps for state tournament
By Matt Tate Michael Hollinshead placed third
in last weekend’s regional wres- tling tournament at St. Stephens High School in Hickory, earning him a spot in the NCHSAA Class 3-A state tournament that begins Tursday (Feb. 24) and contin- ues through Saturday (Feb. 26) in Greensboro. Hollinshead, a senior, expects the
competition to be stout. “Everybody here is at the top
level. It will be about who wants it more. Seeds don’t matter,” he said. He is one of 16 wrestlers vying for a state crown in the 145-pound class. Te NCHSAA’s annual state
wrestling championships brings to- gether more than 600 of the state’s best prep grapplers for competition. Almost 1,300 individual matches will be contested over the course of the event en route to crowning 56 different individual champions. Hollinshead sports a record of 43-3 this season.

BlackHawks show poise in playoffs
By Matt Tate David Rhoney can’t quite figure
it out, but all he knows is that his team responds when there is a chip on its players’ shoulders. Te North Buncombe coach said
it showed how much the Black- Hawks relished that underdog role during Monday’s (Feb. 21) 86-71 victory against visiting Ashbrook in the first round of the NCHSAA Class 3-A playoffs. Rhoney said it was likely the best
four quarters his team has played all year. “Te best four or five games we’ve played this season have been

when we’re an underdog,” he said. “Fortunately for us, we’ll be the un- derdog from here on out.” Kevin Bailey led four BlackHawks
(17-8) in double figures against the Green Wave with 27 points, while Sam Rector added 23. Christian Bridges chipped in 19
points while Kyle Ward had 11. “I think we’re playing our best
basketball at the right time,” Bridg- es said. Results against fifth-ranked
Hickory in the second round of the playoffs were not available as of press time Wednesday (Feb. 23). Te girls’ team also responded
with one of its best complete games of the season, taking out WNC
Athletic Conference champion Tuscola 62-38 on the road. Haley Higgins paced the Black-
Hawks (11-14) with 21 points with Jayde Ledbetter and Kelsi McHone also scoring in double figures. Coach Robby Parker said the
team played composed as the Mountaineers threw a myriad of looks at the BlackHawks. “Our young kids are growing up
and we’ve seen a lot by now,” Parker said. Te BlackHawks have four freshmen in the rotation, including Higgins and McHone. Results against R-S Central in
the second round of the playoffs were not available as of press time Wednesday.
