Woodfin Baird Cove tank still not functional
By Matt Tate Joseph Martin, Woodfin’s water
director, hopes the litany of issues with the new water tank at Baird Cove Road are starting to dry up. Once the installation of a
$15,000 check valve is completed, he projects an operational date by the end of March or early April at the latest. “Assuming there are no other
hang-ups. And I hesitate to say that,” he added. Te main hang-up for the tank
has been the foreclosed develop- ment it was intended to help serve. When Versant investors went into bankruptcy in 2008, the Town of Woodfin tapped a $3.95 million irrevocable letter of credit to help complete infrastructure, includ- ing the million-gallon tank. Mon- ey from Versant’s letter of credit is paying for the check valve as well, Martin added. Easement and right-of-way is-
sues were tangled up in the de- velopment’s misfortunes, thus pushing the time table back even further.
A system linking the tank to
the primary storage unit at Reyn- olds Mountain, control wiring and valve work was completed last year. Te recent issue occurred when
district workers noticed a high level of pressure building. Te check valve will allow the tank to push water to the main tank when it reaches a certain pressure capacity. Once the tank is operational,
it will help bring better service to many of the district’s custom- ers, including those in the Sunny Ridge development who have complained about some of the district’s problematic pump sta- tions in their area. In other district news, Martin
reported the project to replace aging water lines along Riverside Drive was proceeding well. Be- cause contractors have not had to dig in the road as much as pre- viously expected, the $891,000 project has saved about $200,000 so far, and board members agreed to allow for the project’s expan- sion. It originally was set to end at Craggy Bridge, but now board

members supported replacing as much line on Riverside Drive as the budgeted amount would al-
low. Martin believes contractors may be able to reach Elk Moun- tain Road.
Te board also voted to end the
$1 convenience fee for online bill transactions.

Woodfin Mayor Jerry VeHaun, left, presents a check for $3,640.05 to Mike Plemmons, the executive director of First Step Farms. The check was a dispersement from the town’s ABC store generated from profits from the last quarter. Woodfin Town Administrator Jason Young estimated the town has given First Step Farms nearly $20,000 since the store opened in 2007. First Step Farms is a local non-profit that assists people recovering from alcoholism. The Woodfin ABC Board also gave the town $14,182 on Feb. 15 also stemming from last quarter’s profits.
