formulas, integrating different levels of patented green technologies and demonstrate the potential of eco- designed cosmetics in terms of texture and efficacy. Sinerga has teamed up with a supplier of sustainable packaging and will showcase a complete product concept based on a new cold process emulsifying system. Aldivia will address the question of energy and water in the formulation of shampoos. Well known for their engagement in organic and ethical raw materials, the laboratory will show how global thinking may yield new solutions for our markets. Solabia will be sharing a fully integrated approach to eco-design from plant sourcing to skin care strategies. The main idea being that eco-design should stimulate the development of new structural approaches - what are the long-term impacts of cultivating this particular plant in a particular region? What are the expected benefits for the people who live there? And likewise, what are the long-term impacts of using this particular substance on our skin - an ecological system on its own. Perhaps, a series of questions that may radically change the way we develop products.
The chemistry behind formulating new beauty 2011 will be the International Year of Chemistry - an initiative of IUPAC (the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) and of UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization). in-focus will show how chemistry - organic chemistry but also phyto and bio-chemistry - will be one of the most important disciplines to help our industry take up the challenge of sustainable development. Chemistry is the science that will allow us to understand, measure and evaluate the impact of new substances in the environment. It will facilitate the understanding of nature down to a molecular level and help us find safer and more efficient solutions to manufacture better products. The cosmetic industry is born from the emergence of modern chemistry. And it is again chemistry that will bring our industry to the next level. in-focus 2011 is here to demonstrate that suppliers and brands are already working hand in hand not only to reduce their impact on the environment but also to generate a positive one.
Sustainable Gallery
The Sustainability Gallery will occupy a central position on the in-focus feature. Displaying “Sustainable Success Stories” by exhibitors such as Akzo Nobel, Dr. Straetmans or Lipotec, it will give visitors the opportunity to learn more about sustainable sourcing, green production methods and innovative CSR policies.
BERACA Interviewed Sponsor of in-focus, Beraca has had
CSR and sustainability at the top of its agenda for a lot longer than most. Filipe Sabará, Commercial Director,
talks to SPC, our Media Partner, about his company’s very genuine commitment.
Why are you sponsoring the in-focus feature? in-cosmetics is the number one exhibition in Europe for the personal care ingredients industry so we wanted to have a strong presence at the event. As soon as we found out that sustainable beauty was the theme of in-focus, we knew it was a perfect fit for us. Sustainability has always been the driving philosophy behind our activities since we were founded in 1956, and as it gains greater momentum in the industry we wanted to ensure we were at the forefront of everyone’s minds. There are many companies out there that claim to place sustainable business practices at the heart of their business but the reality is very different. For us, CSR truly is the cornerstone of our operations.
How do you demonstrate sustainability in your business?

Eco-Design - Achieving a Positive Environmental Impact
It goes without saying that our commitment to sustainability is inherent in all areas of new product or service development. Of course we source high quality ingredients that meet industry standards and always take into consideration the well-being of future generations and focus on solutions that are completely sustainable. However our responsibility goes way beyond the physical ingredient offering. We pride ourselves on spearheading local
projects in Brazil that promote regional development and deliver both environmental and social benefits to the surrounding communities – in particular we do a lot of work to help preserve the Brazilian rainforest. Our work has even been internationally recognised – last year we won a SEED Award for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development from the United Nations. Full interview at
