SPRING 2011 UCLAN’S FINNEY CENTRE TO OPEN A new £15m sports centre at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in Preston is set to open in the spring. The Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre is named in honour of


the former England footballer, who played more than 400 games for Preston North End over a 14-year spell at the club. Facilities at the complex, which is being built on the


former Marsh building site, adjacent to Leighton Street and Marsh Lane, will include a sprung timber fl oor sports hall with seating for more than 300 people, as well as a variety of activity studios, squash courts, changing rooms and multi-purpose areas. Finney, who is also a honorary fellow of UCLan, says:


“I am delighted to have the building named after me and to help put Preston and UCLan on the sporting map.” UCLan’s academic director of sport ,Dr Adrian Ibbeston,


adds: “The centre will serve the health and fi tness needs of the students and provide an excellent competition venue for our Student Union clubs.”

BILLINGHAM FORUM TO RE-OPEN A major £17m renovation of Billingham Forum, in Stockton- on-Tees, is set to re-open in spring 2011. Stockton Council has transformed the 1960s venue into a


new sports and leisure complex, which will be managed by Tees Active. The complex will include a six-lane, 25m swimming pool with a new training pool and retained learner pool, as well as an extended 70-station gym and an upgraded ice rink. Improvements to the four-court sports hall, two squash


courts and reception area also form part of the project, and a children’s play barn and function room are to be created. The redevelopment has also been designed to ‘future


proof’ the venue for at least 30 years – fi ve more years than originally anticipated – including the installation of a heating control system. The project was slightly delayed by poor weather conditions last year and the removal of asbestos. Stockton Council cabinet member for transport and


regeneration Bob Cook says: “The exciting transformation of this landmark building is nearly complete and we’re looking forward to opening the doors to the public once more.”

RENFREWSHIRE LEISURE REVAMP A £7.1m renovation to Renfrewshire Council and Renfrewshire Leisure’s Lagoon Leisure Centre is to start in the spring. The pool is to be upgraded with modern water facilities


and a spa area with treatment rooms, while the current arena space will be divided by a new mezzanine fl oor. The upper level will accommodate a new 600sq m gym, double the size of the existing gym, and a fl exible space to host functions and events. The existing gym space will be turned into a spa. Meanwhile, the lower area will house a shared service arrangement with the local social work department, creating an adult daycare centre through a service level agreement aimed at improving services to this user group. The project, which is part of the council’s wider £92m

investment programme. is due to be carried out in phases and is scheduled for completion in summer 2012.
