PUBLIC SECTOR 2011–2012 AND TRUSTS
WORK UNDERWAY ON ROCHDALE CENTRE Building work is in progress on a new £10.8m leisure centre for Rochdale to replace the existing Central Leisure Centre. Located on an adjacent site, work on the project –
contracted to Willmott Dixon Construction for both design and build – began in November, with completion planned for 2012 to coincide with the Olympics. The centre is the fi nal major project in a three-year
programme of investment overseen by Link4Life, the Rochdale Boroughwide Cultural Trust. It will offer an eight-lane, 25m swimming pool and learner pool with moveable fl oor, as well as a sports hall, thermal spa, fi tness suite, dance studios and youth gym. More than 160 car parking spaces will also be available for centre users, free of charge. Link4Life managing director Craig McAteer says: “With the
launch of the trust, £34m was committed by Rochdale Borough Council for capital projects, with Link4Life making a signifi cant contribution to this from planned effi ciency savings. “From an original like-for-like replacement, the project has
now been enhanced to include a full dryside facility.” Projects already completed in the borough include the
two new-build projects at Middleton Arena and Heywood Sports Village, both now open, and the extension/ refurbishment of three other sports centres including the water activity centre at Hollingworth Lake.

WILTSHIRE TO INVEST £117M ON LEISURE A number of council-run leisure centres in Wiltshire are to be handed over to the public this year, but £117m will be spent on upgrading other facilities and building replacement centres. Wiltshire Council announced last year that the Corsham,
Downton, Pewsbury, Tisbury, Westbury and Wootton Bassett leisure centres would be transferred, as would Westbury and Bradford-on-Avon swimming pools. The reason for the proposal is that, to maintain the
existing 23 facilities over the next 15 years, the council would need to spend £93m. This would not include any improvements or new facilities, and in the present fi nancial climate is not seen to be “affordable or sustainable”. However, there are plans to build new centres at:
Melksham, which will offer a four-lane, 25m swimming pool, learner pool, fi tness suite, sports hall and multi-activity rooms; Trowbridge, to include an eight-lane, 25m swimming pool, a learner pool with diving facilities, leisure pool with fl ume, large sports hall, fi tness suite, multi-activity rooms, squash courts and a climbing wall; and Warminster, which will have the same facilities as Melksham. Refurbishments will also be carried out at Amesbury/
Durrington, Devizes, Chippenham, Malmesbury, Marlborough, Salisbury and Tidworth. The proposed plan will take a phased approach starting in 2011–2015, with completion in 2025.
