DEVELOPMENT PIPELINE
JUNE 2011 OSWESTRY’S OSWALD PARK TO COMPLETE Work is to due to fi nish on the £7.5m Oswald Park Active Lifestyle Centre in Oswestry, Shropshire, in June following a halt due to fi nancial diffi culties. Northern Ireland-based Graham Construction was
awarded the contract in July 2010 after Shrewsbury-based Frank Galliers – which started work on the centre in March 2009 – had to leave the project due to fi nancial diffi culties in January 2010. The scheme consists of a leisure complex including a 25m
swimming pool and training pool, a 40-station fi tness suite, various public areas and a suite of management offi ces. Oswestry Borough Council, together with Sport England,
is funding the scheme, and is also planning to create new football pitches, a multi-use games area and a BMX park as part of future developments at the centre.
JULY 2011
LONDON UNIVERSITY SPORTS PLANS St Mary’s University College in Twickenham is to spend £8.5m on a new sports centre and the refurbishment of existing sports facilities this year.
Sport England’s Community Investment Fund has
supported this development, awarding the University College a grant of £500,000. When completed in July 2011, the sports set-up at St Mary’s will be signifi cantly enhanced by the addition of a cutting-edge sports centre consisting of a multi-sports hall and fully-equipped fi tness and strength and conditioning suite. These new facilities will complement the existing sports
offering on the main campus, which includes a synthetic running track, tennis centre and studio. An existing sports hall will be refurbished, and a new biomechanics laboratory added alongside the human performance laboratory and extensive sports medicine facilities. Andrew Reid-Smith, director of sport, says: “We are
delighted with the new facilities that, when added to what’s already in place, will provide a world-class sports village. “This set-up will offer an outstanding sport experience
for students, the local community and elite performers. These excellent facilities have been chosen by South Africa for their 2012 pre-Games training camps and we’re looking forward to contributing to their aim of 12 medals in 2012.”
