Source an Ex-Racehorse

We run the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR Charity) Helpline and as a consequence of this and direct enquiries to themselves, Fred and Rowena Cook of Equine Management and Training were asked by the Trustees of the RoR to set up a website dedicated to the re-homing of ex-racehorses. From the calls and emails received it is clear that a growing number of people would prefer to sell, loan out or re-home their ex- racehorses via a source that has a direct association with ex-racehorses, their future welfare and re-training.

Whether you have a horse to sell, loan or one that requires re-homing or are looking for a horse to buy or loan, then why not place an advert on “Source an Ex-racehorse”? Advertising fees are just £10.00 for 3 months.

It is stressed that the site is not intended as competition to any other websites or magazines advertising ex-racehorses. The various Charity centres can only do so much, and in the absence of any kind of countrywide register, to help put people in touch with each other to keep as many ex- racehorses successfully homed as possible, then it was decided that a dedicated website was the next best thing.

Companies that are committed to ex-racehorse welfare are invited to advertise on the website. They will find that advertising rates are extremely low as a fee is only in place to help cover website administrative costs.

For further information please visit the website - www.enquiries@ souceanexracehorse. co.uk, email Enquiries@ sourceanexracehorse.co.uk or telephone: 01780 740773.

Most people get their feather dusters out in time for a spring clean, however at the Exmoor Pony Centre feather dusters will be put to a different use this winter.

The Exmoor Pony Centre is located outside of Dulverton, Exmoor and provides a base for the charity the Moorland Mousie Trust. The Trust takes the unwanted surplus pure bred Exmoor ponies each year from the autumn gatherings. These little ones need plenty of attention and care to ensure a successful future for them.

Every November the charity holds a foal handling course to prepare the foals for their future lives. Participants are welcomed and will take part in a day course which includes handling the foals using the colourful feather dusters. The duster is used as an extension to the arm to familiarise the foals with a touching sensation while handlers are still at a comfortable distance. The foals are then introduced to wearing a head collar and to being lead. This is a very rewarding experience says Valerie Sherwin, founder of the Moorland Mousie Trust. This technique was developed by Sarah Weston of Intelligent Horsemanship and for four years Linzi Green who works at the Centre has been following her lead and now runs the course throughout November.

The Trust then looks for foster homes for the ponies they take.

CIC** European Championship Squad selected

The 2011 CIC** European Championships will be hosted by Britain and organised by British Riding Clubs (BRC) at Aston le Walls from 3-7 August 2011. BRC will manage the event in conjunction with their own Horse Trials National Championships.

Invitations to be considered for the squad were issued at the end of 2009 and a large group of riders and horses gathered for training and assessment days in April this year. From that group, around 30 riders and horses were selected for further training throughout 2010. Riders benefited from one-to-one dressage coaching from Chef d’Equipe Richard Waygood and trainer Jonathan Chapman, plus group jumping sessions and practise sessions for the team

“We are looking for temporary and permanent homes for our ponies who mostly range from 7/8 month old colts to yearling geldings. We ask anyone interested to get in touch with us” says Valerie Sherwin.

William and Hocus, these lovely four year olds went to live in North Devon with fosterer Penny when they were only 8 months old. They had been handled at the Pony Centre where they learnt to lead and load and then travelled to Penny’s home where they have had

dressage test that is unique to this competition. Groups of riders were also taken to Royal Windsor Horse Show and Blenheim International Horse Trials, where they put on displays of the team dressage test and jumping exercises. The riders were sponsored by Tri-Zone. Training for 2010 finished in October and a squad of riders and horses has been selected for further training towards the Championships next year. Selection was based on the rider and horse’s competition record, compatibility of the horse for the team dressage test, horse fitness, rider fitness and commitment to the team. Those selected included some from our region:

The Charity is looking for foster homes and welcomes interest from anyone with the time and commitment to take a pony on. Previous experience handling young stock is not vital however appropriate grazing and handling facilities are necessary, along with lots of patience! If you are not looking to take a pony home with you but would like to join in the work the charity does please join us on our foal handling course and maybe stay on as a volu nteer. We are a friendly bunch and welcome all interest in the ponies.

Please contact us on 01398 323093, info@ exmoorponycentre.org.uk or check the website at www. exmoorponycentre.org.uk.

Although training events have already begun, it’s not too late to submit an application for the squad. Horse and rider combinations may be considered if they are established at Intermediate/** level and produced exceptional results. To be eligible, you must be 16 years of age or above, and the rider or horse must not have completed a CCI**** at any time, or completed a CCI*** in the two years prior to the Championship (except as a young rider).

Yorkshire Vet Vincenzo Franco DVM MRVCS comes close in ‘Petplan Equine Vet of the Year Award’

Worcester vet, David Denny, has won the prestigious annual Petplan Equine Vet of the Year Award. The Award was announced at the glittering annual Animal Health Trust (AHT) Equestrian Awards gala dinner, held at the Lancaster London Hotel on Thursday 4th November.

Horse owners from all over the UK nominated their vets for this coveted people’s award, which is sponsored by Petplan Equine, the UK’s leading specialist equine insurer. Over 200 nominations were received, from which just three finalists were selected by an independent panel of David Stickels, Head of Fundraising AHT, Alison Bridge, Editor-in-Chief of Horse&Rider Magazine, Madeleine Campbell, President of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA), Gil Riley, 2009 Petplan Equine Vet of the Year and Alison Andrew, Petplan Equine Marketing Manager.

One of the three finalists came from our region: Vincenzo Franco DVM MRVCS qualified in Italy having wanted to be a vet from childhood. He combined his passion for horses with his profession and has worked exclusively on horses for nearly 20 years, the first 14 of which were spent working with racehorses. providing an outstanding service to horse owners,” explained Alison Andrew, Petplan Equine’s Marketing Manager. “All the nominees this year have shown great commitment to their profession making it very difficult to make a decision to choose just one winner.“

The Animal Health Trust Equestrian Awards are designed to recognise the outstanding achievements made by horses, riders, owners and trainers throughout the equestrian world. Since the Petplan Charitable Trust was founded in 1994 it has raised over £5million, almost £500,000 of which has been donated to the AHT to fund research and development.
