Rare and Native Breeds on show at the Vintage

Tractor Show Report & Photos by Louise Graham

On 13th and 14th November, the Vintage Tractor Show on Newark Showground featured a rare breeds display including native ponies and horses, poultry, sheep, pigs and cattle. A real menagerie was housed undercover where visitors could stroll and meet the animals and birds, view the breed societies’ stands and learn about the UK’s rarest breeds. Rachael Bush and I took our Exmoor Ponies. Fell Ponies were well represented. Nicola Ash took her Fell stallion Ludworth Viking and his son, Ludworth Viking Silver. The 22-year-old brown Fell, Notlaw Linnet together with Andy Gibson and Janet Copeland’s Fell ponies in historical mode made up the Fell display. Debbie Nickson showed her two beautiful Connemara ponies. Britain’s majestic heavy horses were represented by Messrs Combe’s and Roberts’ Clydesdales, the National Brewery Centre’s Shires and Northcote Shire Horse Centre. Stephanie Kerry rode her grey New Forest Pony. Jane Glass and Angela Cairns won the award for the best presented display with the Fell Pony Society stand. Angela also led her Welsh Section A Pony. Mrs J. Mackensie brought the Welsh section B Misty of Kinnards who was harnessed as a shepherding pony, along with John Barleycorn, her adorable donkey. Louise Bateman brought along a Highland Pony, Whattonvale Mistral, to this her first ever outing.

Breeds from far and wide were on show too. The golden Austrian Haflingers were brought along by Jo Gleadle and C. Hill. Penny Walster showed her Caspian Horses from the Bathley Hill Stud. Paul Kitchen and Janice Prior brought two unusual mules, bred from American horses and donkeys, making them very large examples. Each day there were parades of ponies and horses, along with some interesting demonstrations such as riding the mules, vaulting and driving, including heavy horses. Nicola Ash and friends had put together an excellent raffle with many super prizes and the Exmoor Pony Society ran a tombola and a ‘Guess the Name of the Pony’ competition. The Rare Breeds section is organised by Claire Izard.
