BEF FUTURITY EVENTING CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS

The Osberton Horse Trials played host to the BEF Futurity Eventing Championship finals for the first time recently, with breeders travelling to the Nottingham venue to showcase their young stock.

Top scorers from the eventing section of this year’s BEF Futurity Evaluations were invited to the Championship to compete in the final judged by experts, Richard Meade OBE and Lady Claire Howick.

The horses who qualified for the championships did so by scoring 85% or above at the BEF Futurity Evaluations, held at 15 venues throughout the UK this year. The Evaluations aim to identify young, British bred sports horses or ponies destined for careers in endurance, show-jumping, dressage or eventing and may even find the Olympic stars of the future.

Just 37 potential eventers were invited to the championships which were divided into four classes; foals, yearlings, two-year-olds and three- year-olds. The first- and second- placed animals from each class were then invited to the main ring to decide the overall champion.

Sue Browne’s stunning bay gelding, Chance In A Million, was awarded the champion title having qualified for the championships at Arena UK where he received a coveted Higher First Premium. The yearling is by international advanced eventing stallion Mill Law and out of Cartoon Town.

The breeder, from Retford, Nottinghamshire, bought Mill Law as a yearling and gave him to her daughter, Nicola Baguley, as an eighteenth birthday present. The stallion, who reached Advanced level by the age of seven, has already sired many BE event winners, an International Advanced Event Horse as well as In-Hand and

Young horse champions, including a winner and runner up in the BYEH Final.

“Having eyed up the opposition in a highly contested Yearling class we were absolutely delighted to be pulled in first by the judges. “We are thrilled with ‘Chance’, it’s a fantastic result and it was lovely to do so well at a show so close to home.”

Adding to Sue’s success at the Osberton Horse Trials, the BE in- hand classes saw the dam, Cartoon Town, win the broodmare class, her filly, Millie Mouse, win the Foal class, her dun filly, Dusty Miller, win the three-year-old class, and Chance In A Million win the yearling class. Mill Law also won the stallion progeny class.

Jan Rogers, head of equine development for the BEF, said: “We are grateful to the team at Osberton for providing Futurity with this opportunity to present its’ top horses at a national young horse festival. Feedback has, on the whole, been very positive and we hope to develop this occasion into a real showcase for the future.

“The Futurity is showing itself to be an assessment system which British breeders value, because it enables them to demonstrate, long before a horse is able to compete, that it has performance potential. It is serving as a valuable marketing tool for British breeders and we are delighted that so many people want to be part of it”.

The BEF Futurity Evaluations are held at 15 venues throughout the UK and young horses go home with a BEF Premium (grade), a stylish rosette and a detailed, informative score sheet. An attractive certificate to keep and frame follows on after the event. All results are published on the fully searchable Futurity site, and afterwards feature with those horses’ performance records on NED, the National Equine Database. BRAMHAM PHOTO WINNER ANNOUNCED

The Bramham International Horse Trials Photo Competition once again proved extremely popular, and the Organisers are delighted to announce that this year’s winner is Sara Reynard from Botcheston in Leicestershire.

Sara’s picture of Nicola Wilson and Bee Diplomatic at the Sunday morning Vet’s Inspection captured the feeling of ‘all things Yorkshire’ with the famous Bramham Clock Tower in the background, together with the Yorkshire Rose beautifully marked on the horse’s hind quarters and a true Yorkshire rider.

Sara is a member of the team who organise the Vet’s Inspections and has been doing this role for the last three or four years. “I got a really good camera in May, and I just kept snapping away in between my duties at Bramham. I’m amazed and delighted that one of my pictures has been chosen as next year’s front cover. I wanted to try and capture the beauty and features of Bramham Park, as well as capturing the feeling of the competition.”

Sara is currently on a ‘career break’ (being a Mummy!) from her position of Ladies Nightwear Designer for George at ASDA, and is keen to develop her love of country lifestyle photography into a part time career, and she plans to launch a website at the end of the year.

Two runners up were chosen. Jane Horton from Leeds with her photo of Laura Shears and Kings Fancy, and Tony Dallamore, also from Leeds, with a great action shot of Carnival Hill II ridden by Cassandra Price.

With over 300 photographs to choose from, it was once again a very difficult decision, but Event Director, Nicholas Pritchard said “It was great fun to judge. The standard of photographs was very high, and we are delighted with the result.”
