success stories Oystercatcher Highs and lows for Larapinta. Photos by Lesley Jeffs, Tigertotz Photography

Janice Allen tells us about the ups and downs of her year: “The year started with a devastating loss to the stud, on Thursday 11th February our beautiful mare Forlan Tia Maria became ill with suspected colic, the vet attended & Tia was treated but Friday 12th she was still no better so the vet was called again but before he arrived Tia collapsed and within 20 minutes she was gone. It was a terrible time and even more heartbreaking as we believe she was in foal.

Trying to get back to some normality was hard; we had had her for 12 years, but we ventured out to NCPA Notts/Lincs on 18th April with Tia’s two daughters Larapinta Tawny Pipit (Roo) and Larapinta Topaz (Poppy). Roo won the yearling class and Poppy won the 2/3yo class and went on to take the championship, I shed a few private tears thinking how proud Tia would be watching over her two girls. East Midlands WPCA followed where Roo and Poppy were both 2nd.

Saturday 8th May saw our lovely mare Springbourne Holly give us a colt foal, Larapinta Harris Hawk, by Larapinta Oystercatcher (Ronnie), another cracking addition. On May 16th at NCPA Staffs,

Laura Watson on Barry H came 2nd at HOYS in the 153cms WHP class. She is a member of BSPS Area 4B.

Laura is 17 years old and Barry H is 9 years old. Laura has been riding him for two seasons after bringing him on as a 6 year old. They qualified for HOYS at NPS Area 5 and went Champion. This was the first time at HOYS for both of them.

Roo was 8th but Poppy won a very strong 2/3yo class. On 6th June it was Midland Counties Show at Uttoxeter and Poppy was 2nd.

June 22nd saw me in hospital having a knee operation. I know, in the middle of the show season! With a walking stick and help, we went to Shropshire County Show on 27th June with Ronnie where he was 1st & Res Ch, I must thank Kevin and my good friend Lesley Jeffs for doing all the work that day

as I had to take it easy!! So hard!! Haha. It was a lovely weekend away and Kevin even took his bike to cycle into town on the Saturday night for fish & chips, wonderful.

On 4th July we went to Market Bosworth show where Poppy was 4th and Ronnie was 2nd. We had a break then until Bakewell Show on 5th August when Poppy was 1st (she has won this class for the past 3 years as it is a 1/2/3yo class!) and Ronnie was 2nd.

On 8th August it was Wingerworth where the results of Bakewell were reversed, Ronnie was 1st, Poppy 2nd.

Kevin then took part in the Erewash Triathalon on 15th August finishing 4th in his age group, which was brilliant.

Poppy & Roo

On 21st August it was back to showing and we went to Ashbourne Show, Roo was 4th, she

Arena UK’s Lauren Humphries’ daughter Katie, riding the 15-year- old Barkway Bridesmaid (Nell), came third at HOYS in the lead- ing rein show pony class, proving that experience shows. The lovely 122cm mare was led by producer Gayle Holder from Surrey. Nell is by Beckside Little Toff out of Sand- bourne Confetti. They qualified for HOYS at East of England.

was so excited at the ‘pony party’ and wouldn’t walk and the judge liked them to walk, Poppy was far better behaved than her sister and was 1st, Champion & Reserve Supreme, a great day!

For the last show of the season we decided to do the NCPA Pony of the Year with Poppy and Ronnie. Poppy won her class and Ronnie won his, so were 2/3yo & Stallion of the Year 2010.

They both then qualified for the Brown Turner Ross Champion of Champions, Poppy was up against big competition and missed out, Ronnie was up against 15 others, all shapes, sizes, breeds and he only went and won it! What a feeling when the commentator called my name and Ronnie’s, it was amazing, so Ronnie had another sash plus £50 prize money. We came home with 3 sashes, 4 rosettes, 2 plaques and £80 prize money, what a day and what a way to end the season.”

Hey Mikki, you’re so fine!

13 year old Mikki Bailey, on her 8-year-old Welsh cob, Rhydcledan Reflection (Dafydd) qualified at The Silver Horseshoe Riding Club for the Festival Association championship. They went to Preston for championship in October 2010 and they came 1st reserve champion in the 148cm class and went on to win the Blue Chip open pony for the 2nd year running so they were awarded a life time’s membership. They also won 3 members’ awards on the day. That was a great end to a very good summer.

They had 2 wins at Southwell Show and were winners of Holton-le-Moor Riding Club’s intermediate and open pony trophies. At The Silver Horseshoe, they won the intermediate 90cm, 95cm and 1m trophies and on The Silver Horseshoe RC’s championship day they won a lovely jacket from Chukka Cove for having the 2 fastest times of the day in the intermediate ring. They have also won the intermediate and open pony again at Norton & District RC - that’s 3 years in a row now. Then went to the Lemon Tree Stables show and won the open class on her pony Dafydd and she came 2nd in the pre-novice horse class on her new horse Julian Joachim

(Johnny). He’s only 6 years old and he raced until he was 4, had never jumped before she got him and she had only had him a few weeks. They are all having a month off from competition and I think Dafydd’s ready now to go back to BSJA in the New Year as he’s that bit older and will be able to deal with it better now.
