A lighter approach
Reducing the weight of an aircraft can have a beneficial effect on the environment. Desso’s latest solution does just that
A new lightweight carpet from one of Europe’s leading carpet manufacturers, Desso could help airlines achieve a 25% improvement in fuel efficiency. The lightweight carpet will be Desso’s showcase product at Aircraft Interiors Expo 2008.
The aviation industry is responsible for 2% of the planets total CO2 emissions, and airlines have committed to reducing this by a quarter before the year 2020. As airlines turn their attention to the environment, products that can reduce the aircraft weight, resulting in savings in fuel consumption, will be at a premium. Compared to the average carpet weight for the aviation market, Desso’s lightweight carpet offers a weight restriction of up to 300 grams per square metre. By choosing Desso’s new lightweight carpets and reducing fuel burn, operators can lower their CO2 emission by up to 15% compared to other carpets on the market and therefore significantly reduce the environmental impact of their business. Stef Kranendijk, CEO of Desso, says; “The development of extremely lightweight materials for cabin products is one of the main themes of the Aircraft Interiors Expo. Desso’s lightweight carpet achieves the maximum possible weight
reduction without compromising on the product quality, which is crucial to the aviation industry.” This product is the result of years of research and development, in close cooperation with partners in the airline industry, to create a lightweight carpet with an anti-static, non-slip surface, and a durable covering capable of withstanding the highest levels of wear and tear. The design is exclusive to Desso and is being registered for patent.
After fifteen years as a supplier to the highly demanding aviation industry. Desso has gained an enviable reputation for manufacturing and supplying quality cabin coverings to leading airlines. Various commercial airlines have committed their entire fleets to Desso. Airlines can choose from a broad range of Wilton woven carpets or opt for custom-made design to their own specifications. Aircraft Interiors Expo is the world’s largest exhibition exclusively concerned with airline interior design and airline cabin systems engineering, visited by international aviation experts and commercial airlines from all over the globe.
