Illuminating medical observations

The perfect trip: comfortable seats, personal selection of movies, perhaps a glass of wine and a meal. Could arriving rested and relaxed also be possible?

The medical community (specifically the field of Applied Ergonomics) has been studying the effect of lighting on human sleep patterns, fatigue, and jet lag for some time now. These studies have shown that by providing a cabin lighting system that varies the illumination level and colour of lighting, the passengers will have a healthier environment. Aerospace Cabin Mood Lighting Systems provide just that. In addition to the obvious beneficial visual qualities of mood lighting, recent studies show the physiological and biological benefits are even more significant:

“The effects of good lighting extend much further than we used to think. Recent medical and biological research has consistently shown that light entering the human eyes has, apart from a visual effect, also an important non-visual biological effect on the human body. As a consequence, good lighting has a positive influence on health, well-being, alertness, and even on sleep quality. Our better understanding of the diversity in lighting effects teaches us that new rules governing the design of good and healthy lighting installations are required. Thanks to the recent discovery of a novel photoreceptor in the eye and its probable distribution within the eye we can now begin to define these new rules. These will guide us to dynamic lighting installations: that is to say dynamic in lighting level and dynamic in tint of whiteness of the lighting colour.” (1)

The biological effect the abstract above is referring to is the circadian rhythm (commonly known as the “body clock”), which is a roughly- 24-hour cycle in the physiological processes of living beings. Studies have repeatedly shown that the body clock can be “reset” by the wavelength (colour), timing, and intensity or illumination level of the lighting a person is subjected to.

With an innovative design that reduces installation and certification costs, progressive airlines such as Air Canada are enhancing the passenger experience economically by creating a dynamic and customisable lighting environment in the cabin through the installation of an LED based Mood Lighting System in their fleet of Boeing 767-300’s. Bruce Aerospace has developed this patented mood lighting product line to provide a simplified, safety conscious, state-of-the-art mood lighting solution with benefits such as: • Proven Technology; In service now on Boeing 767-300

• Offers the best possible light quality with maximum colour rendering

• Will fit into existing light apertures • Simple to use, low cost controller strategy • Minimal or no re-wiring expense • Proven reliability • All LED luminaries • Expandable system: install in one or more zones as required

The Bruce Aerospace Mood Lighting system design is based on the latest high-powered LEDs with a proprietary heat management configuration that ensures maximum life – a minimum of 60,000 hrs. Bruce Aerospace provides a highly cost effective design approach for a fast and economical installation, and once installed will immediately add to the airlines bottom line with reduced maintenance costs through the reduction of spares inventory and usage, labour costs, and increased gate dispatch reliability with the maintenance free system. The most important contribution to the airline the Mood Lighting System will make however is in the increased customer satisfaction, positive brand recognition, and increased brand loyalty by the flying public.
