Bridging the divide between offline and online gaming, G3i talks to gaming executiveMarcus Honney about his leap to the ‘other side’
As part of G3i’s series of articles bridging the divide between off- and online gaming, we talk to gaming executives with experience working in both camps. This issue we chat to Marcus Honney, who has recently joined Net Entertainment based in Malta. Net Entertainment is a premium supplier of digitally distributed gaming systems used by some of the world's most successful online gaming operators. In his previous roles, Mr. Honney has worked for land- based gaming suppliers TCSJohnHuxley and Aristocrat Technologies Europe.
G3i: In your former 'life' as a live equipment supplier - what were your views of the online gaming sector - and now that you’ve crossed the divide, have your views changed?
FR:Obviously, I was aware of the online industry but did know much about it. My clients, with a few exceptions, were not focusing on an online presence although there was an underlying feeling that in time it would be an area they would need to consider. When my focus was geared towards the slot industry, the increase in popularity and opportunities for the VLT market did make me take a closer look at online gaming in general. The online gaming sector was the last section of the casino supply and operations industry I have not worked in and now that I am fully immersed in the online world I find it both interesting and exhilarating, especially working with Net Entertainment which is a market leader in the B2B sector with its roots and origins in one of Scandinavia’s leading off-line casino operators.
G3i: How do the online 'live' games compare with their land-based equivalents? How do the online slots stack up against their online equivalents?
MarcusHonney, AccountManager, Net Entertainment.
“With the statistical
information available froman online
casino backend, promotions and
tournaments can be monitored and evaluatedmuch
more effectively and consequently can target amore
specific group of players due to the
large amount of data which can be easily analysed and
reported. An online
casino also enables various tools for retention and
activation of players such as free spins, bonuses, etc. to be used.”

It’s not an easy comparison to make as there are similarities such as, Roulette and Black Jack being very popular games in both land-based and offline, in fact, these two games (and their variants) are continuously the top performers for us. With the availability and usage of broadband spreading all over the world, I believe that the online games can offer a graphically advanced and feature rich slot for the online market. NetEnt is constantly pushing the limits regarding applied technology used for creating an ultimate player experience for players whether they have good broadband access or not.
Another point to consider is the RTP variety you can have in your online portfolio. Many of the offline jurisdictions will be limited as to what level’s the RTP can be set at by the local gaming authorities, whereas this is not generally the case in an offline casino.
