CALEDONHOTELSPACASINO,CALEDON This casino is Tsogo’s latest acquisition and was taken over in 2009 from Century Casinos Africa. It is just an hour’s drive from Cape Town and offers a tranquil setting which also features three conference rooms and a hotel near to the casino and spa complex. This casino was opened in October 2000 and a total capital investment of R5m was spent and there are 370 slots and seven tables in 1,244 sq.m of gaming area. There were 284,387 visitors last year.
GOLDENVALLEYCASINO,WORCESTER Opened in November 2006 this casino is operated by Worcester Casino (Sun International) and cost R196m. Situated in the majestic mountain valley of the Boland the resort has 98 rooms in the lodge and the casino has 224 slots and six
tables and it saw 413,382 visitors.
CASINOMYKONOS, LANGEBAAN This casino is operated by West Coast Leisure (Gold Reef) and was opened in November 2000. It is located within a Greek styled resort consisting of 360 self catering units. A total capital investment of R66m was spent and it houses 300 slots and nine tables and smartcard gaming was introduced this year. It saw 925,748 visitors last year and despite a drop in visitors by nine per cent casino revenues increased by two per cent to R114m.
To date there is one Cape Town casino licence which is held exclusively by Sun International which operates the GrandWest, Sun’s most profitable casino.
The company’s 10 year casino exclusivity in the Cape Metropole expires in December 2010 and the Western Cape Gambling and Betting Board are now

considering proposals to permit one of the other four casino licence holders in the province to relocate to the Cape Metropole. The other four Western Cape licenses are Caledon, Mykonos, Worcester and Garden Route.
The gaming board is now engaging interested stakeholders before taking a final decision. The PGWC has indicated that it would seek to extend GrandWest’s exclusivity to enable proper completion of this exercise and any consequential processes.
The obvious candidate to move would be Tsogo’s Mykonos Casino as the Caledon is attached to the spa and is currently setting up a golf course whilst the Garden Route enjoys a profitable niche with virtually no competition.
