math teacher Sylvia Smigelski has been chosen as one of the six fi- nalists for the 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year Award for Buncombe County Schools. Smigelski will represent the
North Buncombe district. Other teachers receiving nominations are Patty Long of Bell Elementary School, Tyson Hamrick of Owen Middle School, Eric Grant from Buncombe County’s Early College, Darcy Wallace from Enka High School and Renee Park from T.C. Roberson High School. “In a school system full of excep- tional teaching professionals, these
six individuals represent the best of the best,” said Buncombe County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin. Candidates were selected by re-
viewing their submitted portfolios and by a committee interview pro- cess. In the last phase of the selec- tion process, finalists will be vis- ited in their classrooms and also be asked to present speeches. Te BCS 2010-2011 Teacher
of the Year will be announced at the annual banquet, sponsored by Pierce Group Benefits, on Sept. 20 at the Renaissance Asheville Hotel.
