Erwin HS Work pays off for Erwin Warriors

paid off for the Erwin Warriors, said Head Football Coach Mike Sexton. Te team snatched victory from Owen in the last few seconds of the game Friday (Aug. 27). “It was a tremendous effort on
the part of our young men,” said Sexton. “Tey never gave up even after they were down three scores.” Te Warriors spent this past week
working on running and endur- ance. In the opener against Pisgah, a few key players cramped up at key times. However, against Owen, the
team as a whole appeared to get stronger in the game’s critical mo- ments. “Late in the third quarter it was
Owen 32-14, and I’m sure a lot of people thought we were finished by that point,” Sexton commented. “[Te Warriors] kept fighting back to take the lead.” Sexton said all the receivers made
key catches at some point during the game and went on to praise several key players including Trey Clark, Max Eaton, Kalongi Har- ris, Shaquan Currenton, Colt Aus- tin, Tanner Brookshire and Darius Jones. He added that quarterback Garrett Brown gave an unbeliev-
able performance. “He had 519 yards of total of-
fense,” Sexton said. “Tat’s unreal. It may be the sixth-best perfor- mance in the state. I know it’s in the top-10.” It was in the last 40 seconds of
the game that Garrett Brown con- nected with Currenton to snatch victory. Sexton said the Erwin de- fense held Owen off long enough for the winning score. “It’s not the numbers that impress
me most though,” said Sexton. “It’s the fight of our young men.” Sexton said overall it was an
extremely exciting game. “If you haven’t, you need to come see these
guys play,” he added. “Tey are ex- citing.” Sexton plans to continue with
the work on running and endur- ance that is bringing the team suc- cess. He said the Warriors travel to
