Erwin Erwin Girl Scouts celebrate growth
By Catherine Hunter A bridging ceremony Monday
night (Aug. 30) marked the begin- ning of a new year for Erwin-area Girl Scouts. Parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters gathered at Bell United Methodist Church to cheer 14 girls who went to Brownie or Junior troops. Girl Scout Junior Troop 212 As-
sistant Leader Jennifer Ballard said the bridging ceremony is when Girl Scouts graduate from one level to the next. Tey had six girls gradu- ate from Brownie to Junior level, five girls graduated from Daisies to Brownies and two girls rededicated their membership in the Daises. Proud parents snapped pho-
tos as their children left their old vests behind and walked across the “bridge” to accept vests for their new level. Te walkway lead- ing from a side door to the main entrance of Bell Church served as the “bridge.” Te girls gathered at the front doors of the church to welcome each graduating scout as they made their way through col- orful balloons and streamers deco- rating the railing.
Ballard read a poem about
friendship, and troop leader Ste- fanie Effler talked about what it is to be a Girl Scout. Te girls then gathered for a friendship circle be- fore breaking for cake and snacks. “I love scouting,” said Emma
Loveland who graduated from Brownie to Junior in the ceremo- ny. “It’s a chance to have fun with my friends and to help the envi- ronment.” Ballard said the theme for this
year’s projects is environmental. Teir projects include recycling aluminum cans, which people can drop off in a bin at Suttles Quick Mart, or working on a flower gar- den. Other activities include over-
night camping, working on badg- es, canoeing, horseback riding and
making crafts. Teir community service projects this past year in- cluded cleaning and fixing up the flower beds at Bell Church and do- nating half the proceeds from their cookie sales to overseas charities. “It helps the girls build self con-
fidence and leadership skills,” Bal- lard said. “Tey learn to have fun helping others.” Te Erwin district Girl Scouts
have a new membership meeting at 6 pm on Sept. 9 in the West Bun- combe Elementary School cafete- ria. Anyone interested in joining or volunteering for Girl Scouts is welcome. Te troop meets regularly at 6
pm on Mondays at Bell United Methodist Church. For more in- formation contact Effler at 683- 0824.
