Outdoors with Ken Higgins New crossbow regulations affect hunters

By Ken Higgins A press release from the N.C.

Wildlife Resources Commission in July listed the changes in the use of crossbows. Use of cross- bows in North Carolina is now considered a method that may be used by licensed hunters any time bow-and-arrow hunting is allowed. Te new 2010 regulation reads:

“Crossbows are legal hunting weapons any time bow-and-ar- row hunting is allowed. Cross- bows must have a minimum draw weight of 150 lbs.” Te fly in the soup is a state

law that requires anyone that in- tends to purchase (or receive) a crossbow to first obtain a permit from the sheriff’s office in his or her home county. Te exception to this requirement is a person who has a valid North Carolina concealed handgun permit and is a current resident of North Carolina at the time of the pur- chase (or reception). Lt. Randy Sorrells of the Bun-

combe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a purchase per- mit is required. It costs $5. You only need the purchase permit to buy a crossbow. A valid hunt- ing license and photo I.D. are all that is required in the woods. Tis, in my opinion, is a

law that should be repelled or changed. Sources tell me that the law was intended to con- trol the sale of pistol crossbows. Maybe it could be rewritten to only require a permit for cross- bow pistols. Records indicate that William

the Conqueror introduced the crossbow to England in 1066, changing medieval warfare, al- though the origin of the weapon dates back to ancient China. It was effective against a highly trained knight in armor and could be used by an untrained peasant foot soldier. For the price of a set of cus-

tom armor, several dozen peas- ants with crossbows could be equipped. King Richard died

from gangrene after being shot by a crossbow during a military campaign in France on March 26, 1199. Tis event changed history. Crossbows were the anti-tank

weapon that leveled the battle- field much as Sam Colt’s inven- tion of the single-action revolver affected early American history. When using a crossbow for the

first time, it’s important to read the instruction booklet com- pletely. Also, if you haven’t shot your crossbow in a while you should reread the instruction booklet. I failed to reread the booklet after 14 months of not firing my crossbow. Ting didn’t work out for me. I had forgotten that the ar-

row must be fully seated against the string before firing. One of the feathers or fletching fits in a

groove allowing the arrow to be pushed back against the string. I inserted the arrow with the guide fletching up and was only able to get the arrow within a ½ inch of the string. When I fired, the steel cable broke, whipping around and striking me in the mouth. A small piece of a connec-

tor became imbedded, and my lip began to bleed. It felt like someone had punched me in the mouth. Any young adults or children

should be supervised and fully trained when using a crossbow. Tey are extremely powerful and accurate. Crossbows are sighted in much like a rifle. Franklin’s Outdoor Sports
