that we need just a bit more light for such an occasion, we look forward to organising the event next year!

KINGSWEAR’S ‘IN SEINE LADIES’

AND THE THAMES GREAT RIVER RACE Last Saturday, a group of six Kingswear Ladies, all of a certain age, and most of whom have been navigating the wondrous waters of the River Dart for quite some years, decided to test their rowing skills on the great River Thames. Joined by 320 other very assorted traditional-style rowing vessels, including three other local Seine boats, they set off, from the rather choppy waters of Docklands, for the haven of Ham in Richmond 21 miles and 28 bridges away. The In Seine Ladies are all members of Kingswear Rowing Club which embraces young and old. It is a

the name of the boat they row - A Seine Boat was used, in olden days, for netting fish for the tables of local people. They feel that obviously they must also all be insane … Their particular boat is named Nancy Tarran after a local heroine who single-handedly rowed out to a stricken ship under ‘the yellow duster’, a sign of quarantine. She delivered food but, alas, was not allowed to return to port. She left behind her a young baby with whom she was finally reunited several weeks later. The ladies love rowing this boat after woman- handling huge whalers during Dartmouth Regatta. They were tickled pink, like their shirts, to introduce Nancy to the mighty Thames.

NEXT? The next event in our calendar is the Brain of Kingswear quiz at the Village Hall on 16th October and we hope that the teams that fought for the cup last year will be joined by others for a fun evening of questions and some light refreshments. Please come and join us if you can. Tickets will be £7.50 a head and teams will be made up of four people - due to limited space in the hall we will only be able to accommodate 20 tables so put the date in your diaries and buy your tickets as soon as they come on sale.

HELP FOR HEROES On Saturday 30th October at 7pm there’s an

thriving club that encourages willing, able and super able, even Olympic hopefuls. With their sedate and measured rowing skills, the ladies have taken part in the Royal Dartmouth Regatta, often winning enough money to buy a bottle of Champagne … Inspired by six somewhat younger local ladies, who rowed up the Thames for the first time last year, Bobby, Daphne, Gill, Lynne, Melinda and Rita felt it was time to face a national challenge in celebration of their combined ages of 341 years !! The Great London River Race has been an annual event since 1988, and each year is gaining in popularity. It is a happy mix of spectacle and speed, fancy-dress and fierce competition and participants trail their boats from far and wide, even abroad. The three other local Seine boat teams Dartesque, Squally Showers and Sea Girls posted extremely competitive times for the distance ranging from 2 hours 59 minutes to 3 hours 18 minutes. Go to http:// www.greatriverrace.co.uk/ to find out more. The In Seine Ladies completed the course at a somewhat more leisurely pace romping home in 4 hours and 14 minutes. The resulting blisters are, indeed, a badge of honour – even if, for the most part, they cannot be displayed for reasons of modesty! The name of the crew In Seine Ladies is taken from

Auction of Promises in the Kingswear Village Hall. With your help, it’s hoped to raise money by auctioning donations made by businesses and the general public. LASTLY BUT NOT LEAST can we ask you all to continue to delve into attics, drawers and cupboards to find all that old redundant currency be it francs, deutschmarks or something more unusual and put it into the buckets which can be found in the Village Shop, the Post Office, Darthaven Marina or the Royal Dart Yacht Club - every sou or cent will make a difference.
