The FREE monthly community magazine for Dartmouth and local villages

Best read local publication by far IN THIS ISSUE Dear Reader

As the nights draw in, local residents need something extra to while away the evenings rather than sit in front of the telly - what better than another bumper issue of By The Dart! This month we provide a timely reminder to local boat owners preparing to lay up their boats for the winter - see our Laying Up feature by Chris Robinson of Shipmates and On The Water by Jamie Coombes. With the Dartmouth Food Festival almost upon us, we’ve a mixture of the latest news and a short feature on Dartmouth’s Celebrity Chefs. Local history fans will enjoy our piece on Philip & Sons’ proud shipbuilding history and the preparations in WWII for the Evacuation of South Hams. Forgive us for stretching the definition of Famous Sons & Daughters somewhat but it’s still a great story. Now’s a traditional time to turn to planning next year’s weddings - we were interested to learn of some typical wedding superstitions that surround such ceremonies (see also our interview with Charlie Glassbrook). October is also when Dartmouth’s art galleries put on something a bit special for Dartmouth Galleries Week - we’ve a taster of what to expect. Our extended Property Pages have met with a warm response - remember to tell the respective agent if you enquire about any property you first saw in By The Dart. Dartmouth says an official goodbye to the Harbour Master Capt. David White next month. We asked him to reflect on his years in the post. Enjoy the issue.
