First Dartmouth Food Festival Golf Tournament announced FOODIE NEWS

The first ever Dartmouth Food Festival Golf Tournament takes place at Dartmouth Golf and Country Club next month, coinciding with the town’s annual food festival. The tournament, a Pairs Better Ball Competition, will take place on Thursday October 21 over 18 holes of championship golf, open to visitors and members.

The event will be played off a ¾ handicap, maximum allowance 18,

with ladies receiving three courtesy shots after handicap deduction. Managing Director, Jamie Waugh, explained: “This new tournament allows us to join in with Dartmouth Food Festival and not only celebrate good food but also a day of great golf. Our head chef is preparing his very popular scrumptious carvery for everyone taking part, so all our players will be able to take part in our own mini festival of food.”

The Red Bullets return to Dartmouth for October Food Festival

Due to popular demand the amazing rock and roll band, the Red Bullets, will be making a return appearance to perform at the opening of the Dartmouth Food Festival on 20 October in the Market Square at 7:30pm.

Having won a huge fan base when they

performed at the Dart Music Festival earlier this year, the band are returning to play at the event as part of a joint-fund raiser for the Food Festival and for the 2011 Dart Music Festival. The unique talents of the band will help kick off the Food Festival for a fun night. The band, borne out of a love for song-writing and excellent musicianship, features: singer songwriter Peter Edwards, drummer Mark Edwards, guitarist Kyle Hall and bass player Mark Wheeler. Each has found a unique place for their songs that embrace a collective love of great pop tunes and display the rock n’ roll roots which flow through the band. The evening will have a retro theme celebrating 50 years of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and remembering the wonderfully flamboyant Keith Floyd who sadly died last year and was part of the local food scene for many years. The menu will reflect this with Keith’s recipe for Andalusian Paella (provided by the Royal Castle and Ferry Boat Inn) and a very 80’s Banoffie Pie from the Dartmouth Golf and Country Club. Pam Braakenburg, Chairman of Dart Music Festival said: “The evening will be a joint fund raiser for the two festivals. Additionally it will commemorate Keith Floyd’s contribution to dining and to the area. It will be great fun and a night not to be missed.”

The tournament is open to any combination of men, ladies or juniors and includes a comprehensive prize table to include meal vouchers at some of Dartmouth’s top restaurants such as The New Angel, Dartmouth Apprentice, Browns Hotel and The Normandy Arms. To enter, contact Tony Chappell on 01803 712 016, or email golfoperations@dgcc.co.uk The Dartmouth Food Festival takes place from October 20 – 24.

David Jones, Chairman of the Food Festival said: “The evening will be a lively start to the Festival and it’s great that we’re celebrating not just what we have now but also some of Dartmouth’s history as a great place for food and drink. The tickets are a bargain at £12.50 and can be purchased from the Tourist Information Centre in Dartmouth.”

All Change at The New Angel

Alan Murchison, who already runs the Michelin-starred L’Ortolan in Berkshire, La Becasse in Ludlow and Paris House in Woburn, is buying the New Angel and has said he would rename the restaurant The Carved Angel as a nod to it’s original title when run in the 70’s and 80’s by Joyce Molyneux. “We’ve got an amazing iconic restaurant in a great location and we want to return it to its glory days,” he said. “It’s without doubt a cracking spot and the restaurant has a great history. It has in the past proven it’s a destination restaurant and that’s what we want it to become again.”

All a bit confusing as Nathan Thomas has only been in a couple of months but it sounds like we can still expect to see a Michelin Restaurant in Dartmouth for the foreseeable future. Alan will be demonstrating at the Dartmouth Food Festival (19th – 24th October) for anyone wishing to see him in action.
