Artful Dodging
A look at what you can see in and around Dartmouth
by Max Brandt (Opinions expressed are those of
the writer – who is, allegedly, a grumpy old man!)
‘C
oldly, sadly descends the Autumn evening. The field, strewn with its dank yellow drifts of withered leaves,
and the elms, fade into dimness apace, silent; hardly a shout from a few boys late at their play.’ So wrote Thomas Arnold in 1867 and, now that Autumn does actually seem to be upon us, let’s have a wee look at what might warm the cockles of y’heart over the coming weeks.
THIS IS A ROUND-UP No, we’re not doing Westerns, promise, but having a quick
look at some of the entertainment in October, before moving on to the Dart Drama Festival, which happens at the beginning of November; wouldn’t want you to miss that.
Dartmouth Film Society is showing what is generally accepted as modern masterpiece of ‘popularist’ cinema
DARTMOUTH FILM SOCIETY
October - November 2010
on 14th October: ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’. If you’ve not seen this moving, sometimes harrowing, film, please, if you only see one film for the rest of the year (a slight exaggeration, perhaps) make it this one. Set in World War Two, it tells the story of what happens when a new Commandant takes over an extermination camp and his young son, oblivious to what is actually going on, goes exploring in the woods at the rear of their house, and comes across a youngster of similar age...only he is behind barbed-wire and dressed in striped pyjamas. From 5th to 18th October, we have the 2nd Open Exhibition at the Flavel. The call has gone out to artists everywhere to enter a piece in this show, which is entitled ‘Solitude’. And, strangely enough, this is the theme to which those artists putting a piece up for exhibition, must adhere. It’s always good to have a look at what local artists are up to, and here is the perfect opportunity. I shall also be having a much closer look at a very local artist next month; our own Kate Marshall, who has an exhibition coming up at The Flavel. The Flavel again, but a little comedy on 15th October. Mitch Benn, not a name with which I’m familiar, is appearing. So, duty calling, I went a-trawling, as you do. What I heard made me laugh out loud! He reminded me of (although he’s actually nothing like) Jake Thackeray, that doyen of late ‘60’s – early ‘70’s musical satire. Mr Benn plays a mean guitar and comments on what is going on around
us...although he doesn’t wear a bowler hat and dress up in strange clothes. Well worth a visit, I’d say; a comedian that’s funny is a novelty in itself! 22nd October sees the start of Dartmouth Galleries
DARTMOUTH FILM NIGHTS April - May 2010
Week – number two this year. Suffice to say that some local galleries will be opening their doors for an evening walk-through so that you can see what is going on. I make no mention of specific establishments this time round because my wife and I got no end of abuse last time I tried to help out. Go look for yourselves; honestly, it is worth it!

chance for you to do just that. 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th November at The Flavel, eight drama groups from all over the South Hams get together to celebrate the art of performing and theatre. This is not a competitive Festival; there are no prizes and no cups and no ‘next rounds’ for which to strive; there are plenty enough of those around to satisfy the spirit of competition. This is a showcase of all that is best in Amateur Theatre, but Amateur Theatre with a Professional Heart! Once again, because the ‘call to arms’ has been answered
by so many groups, the Festival is split into two parts, with each group of four performing on two
nights...come on, keep up, it’s really not that complicated!! So, on 10th and 12th you can see The Dartmouth Players, The Salcombe Players, WhatIf&WhyNot
