The statements and opinions expressed in this magazine are not necessarily those of SMEI.

As we approach our 75th anniversary in Philadelphia, be encouraged by the report of relative improvements in our association and that our traditions – embodied in the Five Founding PrinciplesTM

- remain active and relevant.

In our last fiscal year 2009, like many of your enterprises, SMEI was battered by the steep economic downturn, resulting in a 30% revenue decline and we lost tens of thousands at the bottom line year-on-year. Even while membership dues and other non-dues revenue continued to decline 29% and 36% respectively, this fiscal year 2010 we only witnessed a 9% revenue decline and realized a 107% positive net income

improvement. What’s telling are the drivers of this relative improvement; namely: • Certification revenues increased 16%, as more of you and your worldwide peers sought to differentiate yourselves and announce your professional competence to your clients. Your new CME®

, CSE® , SCPS® designations certifies that you abide

by the highest ethics and principles and have demonstrated knowledge and experience in sales and marketing. The underlying SMEI principle is Professional Standards and Identification

• Event revenues increased 17%, as more of you and you worldwide peers returned to gain an “insider-view” on key sales and marketing issues. In my travel to both affiliates and chapters, you also shared stories of how you identified new career and business opportunities with SMEI peer networking. The underlying SMEI principles are Sharing Knowledge and Continuing Education

• Total association expenses declined 20%, driven by board actions and numerous actions and efficiencies by our association management firm Old Clayburn Marketing & Management Services. Our continuing partnership with the firm is critical and we will extend our agreement with the firm through the next decade.

During the year, we have done a lot of work to elevate our relationship with DECA. Not only have they presented us with awards, but some Affiliate members report that we are well liked, and how great it was to be on the spot to see and feel the appreciation. The underlying SMEI principle is to Assist Students. Looking ahead, we must continue to focus our power, talent and Passion for the

Profession on board priority #1, which is a 500 net-new membership increase. The activity sub-list includes membership recruiting, retention, and reactivation. In this

regard, a new membership campaign is being launched in October 2010. You can play a role by identifying the sales and marketing professionals you know who could benefit from an association with SMEI.

SMEI board priority #2 is non dues revenue, with a particular focus upon entering into 20 Enterprise Partnerships. Please contact us, if your firm or one you can refer would like to maximize your visibility by exhibiting to our international audience, advertizing in the Marketing Times®

, sponsoring events, etc. We can tailor a suite of Enterprise

Partner benefits specific to your firm. Finally, the momentum is building around our 75th Anniversary and SMEI Academy of Achievement Awards celebrations during the October annual meeting in Philadelphia. Gerhard Gschwandtner, Publisher of Selling Power®
