Sales Management Magazine Gets Involved After Charlie Abbott’s effort failed, Sales Management Magazine began a campaign to get local sales managers associations organized. Milwaukee was one of the early associations to organize as a result of the Sales Management Magazine promotion. At this same time the Sales Mangers in the southwest began to organize and conduct sales conferences. The southwest group ultimately played a key roll in the formation of NFSE – The National Federation of Sales Executives.

1929 Stock Market Crash

The famous crash of the New York Stock Market in 1929 followed by the Great Depression of the early 1930s resulted in massive unemployment. It was during this period that it became very clear that salesmen create jobs. It was also during this period that selling began to be recognized as a worthwhile profession.

IBM and Tom Watson Support

During this period there were other national organizations of Sales Managers such as the American Society of Sales Executives and the International Association of Sales Executives, which Tom Watson of IBM supported with the initial funding.

The above-mentioned organizations along The American Marketing Association all became part of the NFSE at the start; the founding fathers purposely chose the term federation in order to avoid conflict with the several existing associations. The annual dues for NFSE were purposely set very low in order to not have a significant financial hurdle to be a part of NFSE. Interestingly the American Marketing Association disaffiliated when the NFSE annual dues were raised from .50 to $1.00.

Norvell liked the idea and asked that it be sent to him in letterform so he could take the idea to the editors of Sales Management Magazine. W. V. Ballew sales manager of the Dr. Pepper Co took over the task and outlined what he thought the Federation of Sales Executives should be and do.

Norvell followed through and discussed the plan with A.R. Hahn managing editor of Sales Management Magazine. The magazine thought well of the idea and agreed to survey the Sales Managers Clubs to get their opinions. The results were very favorable and the magazine published digests of the survey results in three issues in 1935, June, July and August.
