twenty-nine men. Sales and Marketing Executives International was founded (as the National Federation of Sales Executives) in 1935, and DSA Programs caught on by the growing number of affiliated clubs.


Tony Whan of SME-Los Angeles commissioned the “Sammy” trophy award. It was designed by an internationally renowned artist and presented in June 1950, at their first annual “Sammy” Awards banquet.


The Distinguished Sales Awards is now given each year by SME-I to hundreds of qualified salespersons worldwide. It remains our professions premier award to acknowledge excellence and provide community recognition for outstanding salespersons.


Sales Manager Clinics


The Detroit NSEI Club promoted a Sales Managers Clinic under the chairmanship of Larry Doyle of The Ford Motor Company. NSEI publicized the event and soon other clubs began conducting these events as a service to members and as fundraisers. Eventually the Sales Manager Clinic was renamed by SMEI and held regionally as Sales Manager Institutes. These events were promoted jointly with the affiliates and the profits were shared between SMEI and the affiliates.


Selling As A Career Essay Contests


The NSEI Clubs promoted the essay contests with local school officials and the student contestants prepared essays on “ why I want to go into selling.” The essays were judged by the local chapters and suitable recognition provided to the winners. In some instances scholarship grants were awarded.
