BUILDING SOLID FOR LASTING SUCCESS
There are 18 million-plus students enrolled in U.S. higher education. There are 1.4 million faculty and an equivalent number of administrators managing 4,300 or so campuses. Add to those, thousands of people working in government, software companies, printers, con- tractors, consultants, lenders and other fields that support higher education. By size the higher education industry is gargantuan. Lately, we in the industry have been distracted by bankrupt governments, shrinking endow-
ments and cash-strapped families. We can be so consumed in the gravitas that we lose sight of the fragile relationships that
hold it all together. The successful ones in which gifted instructors ignite intellectual curiosity and propel
student achievers to great discoveries or accomplishments. Or the flawed ones that force a loyal and competent employee to quit an overbearing boss. In this issue of Today’s Campuswe look at relationships from several angles. Not surprisingly,
much of the focus is on relationships with students—when to and how to start building bonds that endure, for example. Then when to and how to nourish those relationships after their trips across the commencement stage. We also delve into the relationships among faculty, staff and administrators, between them and their students, and with their communities. Higher education may be more and more businesslike, but it is very much a people business. People businesses thrive on relationships.
