EDITOR’S NOTE Education is a people business W

ith so much attention paid to dwindling finances and burgeoning technology, it’s easy to forget that education is first and foremost a people business. So in this issue, we

focus on the nature of the relationships with students, of course—but also alumni, the community and our faculty and staff colleagues. All of the articles in the feature are about human connections. But when you read the other articles in this issue, you’ll see that they all

are about relationships. Attorney Jim Castagnera’s contribution is about once positive donor relationships gone sour. Ann Klein’s risk article is less about the risks themselves and more about the role campus safety plays in strengthening relationships with students, parents and community. Joe Dysart’s story on the latest in online review tools demonstrates the importance of managing indirect relationships. Even Stephen Clemente’s piece on financial literacy is about the financial aid officers’ relationship with misinformed parents. Building Solid Relations for Lasting Success. Pay attention to the notion of

lasting success. Measuring victories in semester-long increments is unwise.. Short-sightedness is a fallacy to which Wall Street derivatives traders and deep ocean oil drillers succumbed. Higher education has historically taken the long view. That’s a concept worth preserving. TC
